Internet versus in person communication

Has the internet helped or hindered communication w/in the hobby. In other words with its anonymous bent do conversations/info flow more freely, speakers feel less intimidated where they might in an in person crowd? Has the Net made it less personable? More vitriolic in some instances? Do some collectors still shun the Net, thereby depriving many collectors of their wealth of knowledge? And if so why? I think it would be interesting to hear from the young/old,from the quite learned/novice collectors among us.

Dealt with a couple ladies and a guy in the shop, today. Had a couple correspondences with customer online who hasn't received his item. Communication remains the same, and at the forefront of business in either place. It is work in progress. To me it doesn't matter if it is here or there.

I dunno. I guess I am old fashioned, chasing people around asking "were you satisfied?" and sending "thank you's" and so on. They are all repeat customers and they sure come back. I go extra miles for many. I guess a little "thanks" would be cool. My rant is over.

I think it is a double-edged sword that cuts both ways.

It is a boon to people like myself who communicate better in writing than they do in person (or at least think that).

But it also lacks the subtler nuances of body language, which can be both good and bad.

The Internet has drastically changed my life, my relationships, and my thinking, both for better and for worse, but mostly for better.

Hey my icon resembles that remark. To me it has increased communication both good and bad. For me it has allowed Dr.s to see my medical info faster and with more accuracy. The internet has also led to massive arguments that have caused substantial damage just by a misinterpreted word or phrase. That happens often on this board. they way information is used has changed dramatically. I am a newb and I use the PCGS site every day to compare coins and determine fair prices for purchases and sales.

The interesting thing about the Internet, is that it also allows non-anonymous people to broadcast their beliefs quickly around the globe in a way that wasn't available before.

My daughter called me the other day and asked : "Father did you defreind me ? ". I said, "Oh boo, so I don't like cats and reading all the stupid stuff from others…, why don't you join PCGS ? "
She asked what that was. I said it's a bunch of intellectual guys with more drama in their lives than you will find in that other place. She said "Oooh, that sounds fun "

Society is moving towards more electronic communication, email, chatrooms, blogs, and other social media forms. I think this reliance on electronic communication over face-to-face interpersonal relations is somewhat bad and leads to isolation and in general contributes to poor social skills. Think of it this way; the question of why do you go to a coin show has been asked here many times. Many of the replies have been centered around connecting with friends and dealers at the show and lot viewing. If electronic communication is so great then why is personal contact one of the main reasons given.

On the flip side the net has helped the coin hobby/business be somewhat more transparent and given collectors access to considerable information that was not possible before.

Thanks for the input. I suppose it's all a matter of ebb/flow. After one spends so much time on electronic devices one tends to miss the in person contact. Then after awhile you resort back to the isolation of the net. I guess this analogy might apply here:It's like when you invite relatives over for an extended in person visit, then 2 days into it you're counting the days until they leave so you can get back to communicating with them via electronic means.

In my humble opinion, the internet allows for faster communication, the quality of the communication however has not changed.

I was around before internet and cell phones, to me they are tools, some folks use them and some don't.

While I enjoy communicating with others on the net, face to face
conversation can't be beat. Sharing info on the net has helped
me on a variety of topics. The speed with which the info comes
to me is amazing. No more snailmail waiting.
