AU58 and MS62. Is there a connection?

I personally had a Seated Lib Quarter that went from 58 to 62 and in another thread tonight, a 62 Morgan is drawing some opinions of 58. I've seen it several times before
as well where 58 goes to 62.

What is the 58 / 62 connection? I've personally never heard of a 58 going to 60, 61, or 63, though I suppose it has happened. Is it me or do you see it too?

I think it's not unusual. The hint of rub is sometimes debatable, and that's all that separates the two.

I think of an AU58 as choice or gem coin with a touch of wear. MS62 on the the other hand can have alot of distracting marks but no wear. When an MS62 coin gets a touch of wear, it might end up a 55.

I have seen MS coins that have a very light cleaning go 58. I have a bunch of 58's that I would like to see go 62, like my 84-S Morgan for instance!

Whatever grade it is its really just an opinion of the coins value. One grader values it more is the only difference.

A cpl years ago I posted pics of (3) 1909-S Lincolns. Forum consensus was 58 on all 3 coins.
2 came back 62RB and 1 came back as a 58.
CohodK gave no numerical grade, instead he gave his opinion in $$$ of value. He nailed it dead on.

Gold aside, the whole territory between AU58 and MS62 is funny ground and to me a bit arbitrary. Gold follows more reasonable rules, it seems.

I had an 1832 Bust Quarter in an NGC holder MS62. Never forget this I cracked it out because I thought well, a 63 easy. I got it back from NGC altered surfaces/AT. I had to bring the coin and the original ticket to NGC people. They corrected it back to MS 62. I sold the coin.

And that is exactly the opposite of what they should have done.

Grading is subjective. AU is sometimes about mint state.

Hey Jack! I don't know. Really? Well, I guess I got lucky. I mean what's the difference? I asked them to review or exam the coin again. It got reholdered at the original grade. Don't people do this now? I mean review? Regards, Mike

MS62 is [usually] an ugly coin. An AU58 is usually a nice looking coin. An MS62 with wear would be more like an AU53.

Wear and battle-scars are two different things altogether.
