You just never know where you might find a collection

So back in February I had my tax appointment. As I was chatting with my tax guy, I was telling him about my return to collecting and asking if I could write off ripped packs as a gambling expense...LOL. He was NOT comfortable with that. But the conversation turned to his childhood collection. He told me he had about 6 Seaver RCs. In my head I'm picturing the 68, but I ask, the one with Tom Denehey. He says ya that's the one. I give him some ballparks depending on condition, and he goes on to tell me about some Winfield's without a team. Cool. So 74 Winfield as well. Looks like his collection spans from 67-74.
Fast forward to today. Knowing I was gonna owe this year I had filed an extension. He completed it today and called to tell me I could come in next Friday to sign. I asked if he'd be willing to bring the cards he has so that I could give a rough appraisal and give him archival quality protection for anything that had value. He was stoked and said for sure. Then he asked..."what about the cases and boxes? Should I just bring a list of what I have?"
WTH did he just say??? I picked my jaw off the floor and said, do you mean unopened boxes of packs?
YES.
Holy Crap! What is this dude sitting on? Well...unfortunately, it doesn't sound like it's anything from the 67-74 range and is most likely late 80's stuff, but I told him to catalogue what he has and bring the list with the shoebox next week.
I'll update this thread next week. All I really want is one of the Seaver's if they look ok, but if I can get the wax at the right price and depending on what it is, I may take a swing at that too. He has a 15 year old son that seems to have interest too, so worst case we get another collector, but hopefully I can bring something home with me next week.
Just goes to show, there are a lot if hidden collections out there still.
Stay tuned.

Before hitting the shoeboxes I inquired about the unopened he'd mentioned. He showed me a pic. It was 2 boxes of 89UD, 2 89 Fleer, and a 91 Topps. Is there anyway to tell if it's a DS box? Or do you just have to open it? That was disappointing, but mostly expected.
Onto the shoeboxes. A full shoebox of 74s yielded some ok cards, but mostly AllStar and World Series. The other shoebox had some beat 68s (no stars), some beat 69s (no stars), a couple stacks of 70s, a small handful of 71s (they moved 3 times that year which likely accounts for the delta), and a half shoebox was 72s and 73s, and 3 football cards...all RCs.
72-74 were in really good shape. Was hoping to stumble onto a Fisk or Schmidt, but no such luck. Also no sign of the Seaver RCs he thinks he has, but based on the look of the pre-72s I'm not holding out much hope that they're in good condition if he does have them. I really like the shoeboxes they were housed in though.
I snapped a few bad pics and made plans to check out the rest in July sometime. It was a fun morning though. With more time I think I could have found a decent chunk of gradeable commons, but knowing he's not gonna sub, it would only be worth the time if I bought the collection.
Will update again when I see the rest.
