Ebay Security Breach...

I would recommend that everyone change passwords ASAP. I would post the link, but the filter will not allow it because of the wording of the website. I am sure this news will be all over soon:

NEW YORK (Market/Watch) -- EBay Inc. EBAY -1.66% said Wednesday it will ask its users to change passwords after a cyberattack that compromised a database containing encrypted passwords. The online auctioneer said it has no evidence that the attack led to unauthorized access to financial or credit-card information but is working with law-enforcement and security experts. "Changing passwords is a best practice and will help enhance security for eBay users," the company said in a statement. Shares were down 1.4% in premarket trade

It's funny that Ebay hasn't notified me yet. I changed it but thought the source would take the time to let us know.
  • Done. Thanks for the heads up.

  • Whats crazy is that we are just finding this out now when it happened way back in late Feb and early March???

E-commerce company eBay Inc said client identity information including emails, addresses and birthdays was stolen in a hacking attack between late February and early March.

They may have just found out themselves, and perhaps their research indicates the timefame when it happened. Just a thought.

How / where do you change your password?
  • You have to first go to My Ebay then look for tab that says Account-click on it. Then on left hand side you will see a column under My Ebay click on where it says "personal information". From there you will be able to change your PW. Good Luck!

I can't say I'm surprised. I don't remember the last time eBay did something that actually makes sense.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

There will be more announcements from ebay about this breach. It took Target several months to understand the scope of what happened.

DOH! Totally forgot this part. Thanks for reminding. Lost out on snipes before because of this.

<< <i>Anyone else having problems right now changing their password due to heavy traffic on the site? >>

Yup. Frustrating since eBay presumably won't let us bid on anything (i.e., snipe) until we change our password.
  • Yes. I can't get in. Thank God I'm not bidding on anything now, or I'd be up a creek.

I think I'll wait till tomorrow to try and get in.

Done - thanks for the heads up!!

For those that don't want to wait - just sign out and click the forgot password link and it will force you to create a new one after they email you the link to reset

I had that happen to me as well, but I believe it was just because of how busy the site was. I was able to change it the next time I tried (a minute or two later).
  • Talked to "Peggy" on Ebay CS line. She said try again tomorrow when there's less people. Still haven't gotten it changed. Meanwhile I might thinking of going to Beckett Auctions, if this doesn't get resolved soon.

This could be of interest to some.
Edited to add: I just noticed that PWCC started a thread with this information. Sorry for the duplication.

    Dear Collector,

As many have now heard, eBay suffered a cyber attack which may have released encrypted passwords. It is
important to note that these released passwords were all encrypted (not usable as-is) and no financial information
was released. Though the effects of this breach may be superficial, eBay is choosing a conservative tact, forcing all
members to update their current password. In the coming days, eBay will be sending emails to all users; once
received, your account will be frozen until the password is updated.

It is important to note that while your account is frozen, all snipe bids connected to that eBay account WILL NOT be
placed. Once the eBay password-change email is received, we recommend following the prompts and then quickly
going to your preferred snipe website to re-connect your account with eBay.

We encourage folks to watch their eBay email closely and to respond with an updated password promptly (on both
eBay and your preferred snipe website) to avoid inadvertently losing out on items.

Good luck to everyone and their future collecting efforts.
