Technical grade? Cleaned? (Looks like album toning on the obverse, but is it also cleaned?)
Would she grade? VF Details? Eye appeal? Reverse seems far better than obverse?
New with this series, so comments welcomed! Thanks!

Would she grade? Well it looks like it's in an NGC so you tell me
Looks strong VF obverse with XF reverse (net 35), however I do detect mild cleaning on the obverse.
I'd be surprised if it graded (numerically) at PCGS.

I would say 40 Obv. and Borderline 50 totally Original Rev!
But wonder if the grading, particularly for old pieces like this, depends on whether the surfaces were impared in the process? I don't see any "swirl" marks, or scratches....
I know that technically removal of toning/tarnish IS disrupting the surface layer. But in the absense of marks and scratches, the TPG's may overlook it? I've seen some other coins graded that had some questionable fields....but not to this extent.
The look would probably bother me in the long run. If the obverse used to look like the reverse does now, a great dis-service was done here.
What I find odd is why the reverse looks so pristine and the obverse doesn't. Why would someone just want to mess with one half of the coin? Just curious what the motivation might be?
More feedback and insight welcomed. I'll see if I can post a larger photo of the obverse.
Any further thoughts/ideas on what was done (if anything) to the obverse and why the reverse looks so pristine?
- Chances are, the cleaning was very long ago. Note that the central figure is NOT silvery, but has toned back to that very familiar gray that virtually all circulated silver tends toward.
- (Making up stories) It's possible there was a spot on the obverse that the owner wanted to wipe away. He cleaned only as much as required.
- Given that, it's possible that the reverse, and outer obverse, were much lighter at the time of the cleaning? Maybe the contrast between the cleaned and uncleaned wasn't all that significant at the time??
- (Speculative) Wonder if the silver cleaner used had an impact on the central obverse, such that it has reacted to the environment differently over the intervening years than the untouched areas did?
Don't know....but I'd like to think this wasn't intentional. If the cleaning was as obvious at the time it was done, you'd think the owner would panic, and do the entire coin....
The TPG's are a little forgiving on these early dates so it might cross okay. But honestly, I'm not impressed.

Sure....shoot down my theory with one that is both simpler, and more likely. Fine.

Well shows how much I know if they already say it's good for a clean grade.
The actual grade given by NGC was: VF-35
I know that grading is almost entirely dependent on the obverse and that generally the reverse can only detract (and not improve) the grade of a coin. I'm not a big fan of the obverse of this coin, for obvious reasons.
But to me, aesthetically, the appeal of this series (to me) lies in the reverse design; it's pretty darn cool. And this example seemed to have mostly natural toning on the reverse, with details which are easily XF-45, IMHO.
So, the motivation for me was to find an example which exhibited good details on the reverse without breaking the bank doing so. I certainly wish that the obverse wasn't wiped, but I've seen many other graded examples with this look, so I'll just live with it for now.
My 0.50.
But truth be told, I would probably trade you all 3 of my VG-8 to F-15 Bust half pieces for your one VF-35.
good luck

Thank you. I can't wait to get in hand.
