Too Good To Be True....

Well, my trip to the RMU show in PGH usually results in cherry-picking some commons for a few sets, yes over paying a few bucks, but it's worth it. The 2nd goal I have is to pick up one or two "biggies". I almost always go graded but today I broke my own rule, and in fact passed on a nice PSA 8 '64 Clemente in favor of the '57 Williams.

Well, I I thought I could see the card well enough since it was just in a card-saver and the "scratch" marks appeared to be ones typical on cardsavers. Needless to say, when I got home and inspected under a bright light, d'oh!, the scratches were on the card.

Oh well, chalk it up as a lesson learned. Guess I overpaid for the card, but I'll still sub it. Guessing it can't get more than a "5", was hoping for a 6, 6.5 before seeing the scratches. Might keep it in the PC, might not. Kinda feel bummed out, would have been pretty hyped tonight if it did not have the scratches but instead feel bittersweet. Here's the card, back is perfect.

Looks like a 7-7.5 to me

Yeah, that's what I thought to, actually more like 6.5 outside shot at 7. But the scratches are there and as you can see don't show on scan and I didn't notice them in person...

Looks like a great card. Even if it has some surface dents I still see this as a 7. Very nice card.
If it grades a 5 it still looks like a 7 or better.

Bad luck on the scratches. Nevertheless, whatever it grades, that is a card with terrific eye appeal, so I would say you should still be on the sweet side of bittersweet. With the beautiful centering that card has, it will be a high end card for whatever grade it gets.

There are three "line" scratches around the chest area. Not deep, but not tiny whisker scratches either. Tilited under light you can see them. I do have a nice 6.5 Mays that has a surface scratch so maybe the graders will have sympathy. That said, there is a little snow and the corners are nice but not RAZOR sharp. So I'm thinking a 5 is the likely outcome.

I agree. No matter what technical grade it receives, that's a looker!

Even in a 5 holder that card would bring strong money. If you put the words "set break" with it and mentioned the scratches in the description you would still get 7 money for it. Lots of old school raw set builders would pay heavily to put that one in their binder. I thought about going to that show, but decided not to make the trip.

Centering is tough on that card and you got a good one.
