J-228

MrEurekaMrEureka Posts: 24,419 ✭✭✭✭✭
I remember seeing a thread about the (edited to say) 1859 pattern cent J-228 here, in which there was some text quoted from the letter accompanying the delivery of 1000 (or more?) pieces. Can somebody help me find the thread?

Any other relevant info would also be appreciated, of course.

Only reference to 1000 pieces I could find was Ed62's post in this thread: http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=912763

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Here's the reference to a NARA record from Ed62's post:

<< <i>"Dave Bowers recently wrote an article asking if these should be considered regular issues. There is quite a buzz for them right now due to that. What do you think?"

In the national archives there is a record of about 1000 of the new (reverse) design struck in December 1859 on the regular presses.

Conclusion: The MS pieces were struck as a regular issue and should be recognized as such. >>

If they become a regular issue, would they lose their Judd catalog number?
