Is there any way to tell if an 89 Fleer case has the ripken error?

Serial number? Location? I have no idea....

Nope....although if you know the errors, more than likely opening a few packs would get you the answer

Yes. The first two numbers on the black factory stamp on the side of the case indicate which printing run. The first two numbers range from 88-94 on the cases I have seen. The ones starting with 88-89 will have the Ripken FF error. After that it gets a bit more challenging to know which variant is in the case. That is a separate discussion all together.
