What would you do with cards like these?

Hey guys - just culling through some cards of my youth and was curious what other board members do with these types of cards. Would you bother getting them graded or just leave them raw? I am tempted to sub them just to have them encapsulated but then I think is there reallu any benefit?

Thanks!

I would leave them in the card savers and store away. Both my comic and card collections from when I was a kid bring back great memories when I look through them.

Depends on what you want to do with them. If you are going to keep them, why imprison them?

to protect them of course. Look what already happened to them. image

    agree with this one

for the others, just leave 'em be - nothing to be gained that a top loader can't solve for you

I am not sure they need the protection of a slab at this point lol!

The funny thing is I didn't personally destroy any of these cards. I bought them that way and my older cousin gave me the Brett. I believe the Ryan was $3.50. When I bought the Aaron it was actually considered a high grade example at the time!

The Gibson I got in a game of chance at a card show where you roll dice. Snake eyes got me the Gibson, a 1959 Nellie Fox and a 1971 Seaver. I was beside myself with joy. Unfortunately, they were all around the same condition.

I remember picking up the Maris at the National at the Hotel Penta in NYC in 1981. A dealer named Tony Galante or Galovich or Galavant or something like that was selling lots of vintage star cards in plastic wrap at discount prices. it was like opening a pack as you could only see the top and bottom cards. I remember him commenting to someone that he was unloading these low-grade cards and was going to focus on high-grade. It was the first time I became cognizant of condition.

I am not an autograoh guy but the Ryan Foundation idea is intriguing.

    (A) Determine the cost to grade (including shipping). (B) Buy decent-quality screw-down holders. Subtract the cost for (B) from the cost for (A) and put the remainder into a college fund for your kid or grandkid. They'll love the cards just as much and will have a small amount of money growing for their benefit over the years.

Gibson signs on the show circuit, and his price is reasonable. I'd get his rookie signed.

I had some of my low grade childhood cards slabbed for sentimental reasons. Nothing wrong with that.

  • Sell em all and use the proceeds to help fund ripping a nice 1970 pack. Of course, you have to share the results!

There is good value on those cards for one who can not afford the big dollars.
