Dos Equis, anyone?

Just picked up two Mexico newps from a seller who ordinarily doesn't have anything within my core collecting interests. (In fact, these still aren't within my core collecting interests other than that these are nice pieces.) I have to admit that both of these coins confused me a bit regarding how to price them, so I consulted a fellow forum member for advice.

In the end, I decided to execute on both pieces for the following reasons: I like the coins; while not must-have pieces, both seem special enough to me to catch my continued interest; I feel comfortable enough about their pricing (relative to approximate presumed value); and I respect the seller enough to give him my business (I only buy from someone I don't respect if the coin is a must-have at a reasonable price).

The first coin is an extremely nice Cob from Felipe III, undated, 2 Reales and ex-EPN.

(As an aside, I'm starting to build a nice accumulation of coins from the Newman collection, including a previously mentioned monster must-have Chaz I 1/2Cr on layaway for which I'll pay a princely sum at the end.)

From the seller's website:

KM-32.1 variety.

We do not usually buy Cobs because they lack the aesthetic appeal we typically seek for the site (i.e. they are usually really ugly).

But this (and the next) are decidedly different, struck on nice, nearly round planchets, well balanced and waaaay better looking than most of the examples we see.

This one is lustrous too, with cool old toning, is about as struck for the issue and, if graded in comparison to other Cobs, could rightly be called a stone cold gem.

From viewing the coin in hand, I agree with the seller's closing comment that compared to other cobs, this could be a stone cold gem. The assigned grade, MS61, seems like a compromise grade because NGC couldn't decide whether to give it an AU grade or a choice MS grade. If we can have an AU63 or AU65 grade, then this might be more believable. But MS61?!? WTF?!?

The second piece is an attractive Charles III Real, but not as attractive as the TrueView images (from which I generated the image below). In hand, the coin looks to have better than MS63 eye appeal. But, I can see light scuffs and hairlines below the pretty toning. And, the cheek has planchet stress. If this were a Seated half dime, it might get graded by our host as MS62+. Still, I like the piece for its assigned grade and will proudly own it.

From the seller's website:

A neat piece with vibrant rose and deep green toning on the obverse, and cool cobalt blue on the reverse as is well captured by our PCGS TrueView images.

When you said "Dos Equis", I expected something with dos equis on it, like a Brazilian 20 (XX) reis.

The cob is amazing but that 1-real piece is truly awesome.

    Thanks Lord.

The Cob was my first choice. When I got the notification of the coins, I was in Shanghai. I emailed the seller inquiring about the Cob, which turned out was already on hold for someone else. The 1R was available, so I woke up my fiancée to ask her opinion of the 1R. I was bummed about the Cob, so I asked for the 1R to be sent to me on memo as a consolation.

I normally wake my fiancée for a very different reason (remember that this is a family-friendly site), so this should give the viewership how disappointed I was about the Cob.

While eating lunch at Pudong International Airport, Shanghai, I get an email from the seller saying that the Cob actually was available. The other buyer wanted my 1R instead of the Cob 2R. Being the greedy SOB that I am, I asked for both coins to be shipped to me.

    Yay me.

As an aside, China is a single TZ currently +12h from the US east coast. I'm not sure how I was able to adequately handle the email exchange with the seller. Maybe I concluded the email exchange before I went to the airport. Details, details. All we need to focus on is that I got two cool coins.

That 1R can come live with me if you ever tire of it and I can afford it. image

    I know I couldn't afford the cob.

Do forget that TR pics are juiced. The coin isn't as nice as the pic, though it truly is pretty.

Yeah, I guess you can sorta tell that from the comparison between the TrueView and the one you posted in your thread.

    Beauty either way, though.
