1985 Topps Rack Pack Card Count Variations

I was looking through my 1985 Topps rack packs and noticed there are some that state "51 Cards" while another pack says "48 Cards". Did Topps make two different card counts that year? Was this common in other years?

  • anyone?
  • Maybe pictures will help.... One the header states 48 cards, the other the header states 51 cards. Is this common?

I've never seen the version on the right. 48 cards is what I remember.
Always thought it was a strange number.

  • Yes, this is what I was trying to find out with some of these more seasoned collectors.

Not a seasoned collector, but since none of them chimed in...

BBCE has the 48 count racks on their site currently.

Mark Murphy's unopened guide lists the rack count as 51.

So I would guess both are legit.

I've never seen that header card (51 cards) used on an 85 rack pack before. Looks like the ones they used on 83 racks. Of course, Topps has a rich history of using old packaging for distribution so I doubt it's anything crazy.

The header matches the same from the 1981 Rack pack, even though 1981 says "48 cards" It seems to coincide also with the fact that 1981 wax boxes were used for 1985 cards.

I have 5 rack packs with this variant. I am getting more this weekend, maybe I can have a full box.
