Collectors Opinion

Hi Guys,

So I am a huge Chipper Jones fan and have been trying to put together his 1991 topps PSA 10 set. So far I have the Shield PSA 10 OPC PSA 10 Micro PSA 10 and the reg topps PSA 10. The only one I have not been able to get my hands on is the Tiffany PSA 10. There has not been one for sale on ebay for over a year I think and seems to be one of the toughest to locate aside from McGwire and Gooden 1985 PSA 10 (0 pop gooden). So the question is I have an opportunity to purchase a BGS 9.5 Gem Tiffany. I have a display case made for this and have a desperate urge to complete this. I am a bigger fan of PSA than BGS, however, they seem to be just as tough with grading tiffanys. If you were in my situation would you be satisfied with the one card in the display graded as a BGS gem mint, or would you continue your search for a PSA 10? I would possibly think about a crossover, but we know how those usually go.

I am leaning towards the purchase, however, some thoughts on what you would do would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Wow, congrats on the PSA 10 Desert Shield, that's quite a card!

It's got a pop of 18 in PSA 10...and while he is very popular, I would wait it out for one to come to market. I think in the long run, you will be happier with a PSA one and who knows if the BGS would cross. You could try to find a PSA 8,9 for the time being for your display.

    Cheers, and congrats so far!

For my collection, as long as it's one of the big 3 TPGs, a mix of slabs doesn't bother me. This is especially true for difficult to find cards, I'll take it in whatever slab whenever I come across it.

If the purchase price is inline with the market price then I would just buy the bgs one. Try crossing it over with a min grade 10. If it passes then great. If not then just relist it on eBay. Doesn't seem like that much downside risk this way. How are the subs on the BGS one?

I agree with Eagles33. If you can afford to take the chance on the BGS then go for it. If that card stretches your budget then I would just wait for the card you want. Chances are if you are patient, one (and usually more than one ) will surface over time. I have been waiting for a particular card for a year now. It has come up a couple of times over the last year but either the price was not agreeable or the eye appeal didn't match the grade so I have waited. If you are eager to display you can always get a PSA 10 of his regular card and just use that in the display until the Tiffany pops up. At least you would not have a gaping hole in the display and you can still put your display up.

I agree with this. The only exception for me is if I've already registered the set with PSA. Then obviously you've got to get PSA so that it fits the registry

Eagles33 the subs are 9.5 9.5 9.5 9(surface). Now the surface of this card is a major issue. I have busted about 10 factory sealed sets in search for the card and every Chipper card has a surface line through the top. Which is why there are so many 8s out there. I am not sure how BGS dings this and the fact that the surface is a 9 it could have the same surface issue. Therefore, would def not get a crossover 10.

Regarding Market value that I am not too sure since very few surface. The last one sold a few weeks ago for $410 on an auction. The last PSA 10s that sold on ebay over a year ago was $899 and ($699 4SC) haven't seen one since.
