I think the short answer is yes, people really are that stupid. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see a bid retraction after one or more of the bidders read this thread, take a closer look at the pic, and think "oh crap!".
When I was assembling my 1960 Topps set, primarily from raw commons and in large part from Greg Morris and Zorbacca auctions, I sometimes had to wait out the...well lets say I don't believe they used optimal bidding strategy. Mostly blanket bids across every card in the auction. Once 3-4 auctions cycled through, all 2-3 bidders would have their cards for their sets, and I was able to snap up an awful lot of cards at min bid.
I suspect a lot of people take advantage of liberal return policies as well....bid high, win card, and if it doesn't look like it will grade out in person, send it back. Kind of folly with Klinger auctions though as he overgrades.

Theres a few sellers that generally sell 300 ultra pro 9 pocket pages(3 100 ct boxes) for $45-48 shipped BIN.
Theres another guy who auctions them starting at $0.99. Often those auctions are over $35 will 2-3 days to go. Several times they've ended north of $50.. They are not shilled. People really are that stupid.
