Breaking my PSA 10 1975 set...did I make a huge mistake? Advice, Opinions?

Hi guys,
I've never sold a baseball card nor any of my collectibles. Decided to refocus on other cards, etc. So grabbed a handful of 75s...regular and mini's. Sent 70-80 in as a trial. But now doubting my method. They are all '75 PSA 10s but just realized looking at them that a lot of them are very low pops. Pops 2,3, and 4s. Also a few cheap dimitri young rookie 10s. But the bids are low. So I think the buyers are going to get a good deal but i may be on the short end.

So should i have submitted them to an auction house for better visibility? Wondering how to maximize the few hundred that I have left that are the same mixture of high quality. Seems like they were just thrown up, not ending on a weekend etc. At least they are ending in the evening. Also, should i have sold them individually or even auctioned them myself a few at a time. Obviously, the question is how to maximize returns.

I just got a few AH catalogues and some of mine could def have place among them. But what's their fees vs the visibility, advertisement they provide? Now they're not the t206 in REA or even the great unopened material that CU members are selling. But to me it could be a significant dollar loss. I think its too late for those but i still have a lot that ill prob get rid of. Experiences? Ugh.

All of Rick's auctions always end simultaneously, which some people have issues with, but the prices his auctions realize is uniformly very strong. There are still several days remaining so it's way too early to worry. That said, in the case of the minis, stronger prices will definitely be realized for those cards that fill the holder.

I use Rick for the vast majority of my consignments, and some of my biggest sales through him have been low until the last day (sometimes the last few hours). His auctions get a lot of attention, and I think for the cards you're selling, you took the right route. In the future you might consider requesting that your listings go up a certain day (I always try to end my auctions on Sunday evening). Good luck with your sales. I hope they exceed your expectations.

i sincerely doubt that using one of the largest online dealers available would be a disadvantage to you. perhaps a little more research before pulling the trigger on wiping out your stash. be patient with the bidders. the big coins drop at the last second.

from what i've seen, it seems most worthy to consider offering the entire accumulation and call it a SETBREAK if you're at or close to completion.
  • I recently consigned some cards with Rick.

I went to bed with one card sitting at $750.00
Woke up in the morning and it finished a little over $3,000.00
(It's been three weeks and the guy hasn't paid for it, but that's another story).

I think your auctions will do just fine, and as others have stated, the big hitters always step up to the plate at the end.

Way, way to early to hit the panic button. Way too early. Almost every auction be it ebay or an AH tends to get the most action late.

When it comes to selling low pop-high grade commons, these cards are for a specific type of collector and have a smaller group after them than there is after the HOFers. So it is possible to get unlucky there; if you sell when multiple wealthy guys are building the set, you can do fantastically; if you sell at an unlucky time when even one key player leaves the game, the price can drop. That's why I prefer the HOFers these days-- plenty awesome, iconic cards to choose from and there's just always more demand there serving as a safety net or backstop, if you will.

I will add that, for a common in high grade, low pop is all relative to how many wealthy buyers are after the cards. I think this is an important angle to keep in mind. If you have a POP 4 PSA 10 and there are only three guys putting huge money into building the set who each already have one, that fourth 10 is going to sell for way less than its predecessors. These would all be things to take into consideration when managing your expectations. I think any PSA 10 star card from the 75 set, especially if accurately graded, is going to perform amazingly for you at auction, be it ebay or AH.

And it doesn't need to be through a major consignment operation either. I just for fun and when procrastinating at work have put up a few high quality cards myself -- and I have been shattering previous VCP highs. If the card is great-- and in demand-- it'll win the day and both buyer and seller will be happy.

  • You guys are exactly right. Always being a bidder it is always frustrating when multiple cards ended in the same minute. Also, I completely forgot I had dimitri rookies until i saw them in the auction. But theyre not huge guys. So, absolutely it's my fault that I should have paid more attention. I just didnt include major stars this time around.

What about selling them piecemeal on my own? And I mixed in mini's with the regular 75s. So, yes, I could have done better. That's why I'm asking u guys. Thx in advance for ur advice. You three have always been helpful and informative.

. Looking thru what I have....where's the best place to sell the low POPs PSA 10s? If i stay with the Internet, PWCC vs probstein? I just went fee-wise. I'm thinking they're both about the same. I think I'll give AHs a try...so, memorylane etc, mine are not big enough for REA, personal suggestions?

    this. times infinity.

doesn't matter who you are or what you have. variances will happen with pricing based on need or greed. but, the numbers never lie. when you have the goods, the reward is and should be yours to keep.
  • I wish you had listed them here first image
Selling off the 10's are you still working on the 65/71/75 sets in 8 or 9?

    Steeler,

If you have the time-- and above all if the cards are strong-- save on the fees and do them yourself. Collectors who need the cards can judge from your feedback, your description, and above all the card, and they will bid the same no matter if you or the big listers are selling them. In fact I believe hardcore collectors will definitely show some love to the solo fellow collector selling a piece, not shilling, just parting with a dear card for whatever reason.

As Itzagoner agreed up above, it's all about the card, always. Not the sticker grade. Not which TPG slab. Not which seller. Just the card. Trust in the card and it all works out.

There is another option as well...

    Consign with me on opcbaseball.com

I don't use auction format. If you don't want to chance a item in auction, you set the price with me.
I have the lowest fees out there. You item will get listed on my site and EBay.

Sell yourself and pay around 13% through EBay.
With me, its 4,5 or 6%

If anyone has any questions, you can PM or call 774-573-1731

  • Hmm, thats all great info again. Lots to consider. But I'm def changing my strategy next time.

To those who have PM'd me, if I sell the remainder of both my 75s I'll def give all of u CU members a headsup, first crack. I'll PM the ones who have specifically PM'd me. And thanks for the advice u all sent me.

All of your advice is def helping, at least it will in the future. I think I def left some money on the table this time around. Hope this helps u guys get some good buys in return. On of the PSA 10 is at a $1.64 or something. I know it'll change...but gee whiz.

So please continue to relate your own experiences, advice. I have a few days left. And I'm sure it's helping others also.

Tsalems1...thx for the invite. Sounds great. I'll have to look into it. I didn't realize u also list them on eBay. That's a big plus.
