OT but had to share. Best mail day ever!

Sorry that this is not card related, but I am buzzing. I feel like I hit the lottery today.
Around 10 AM this morning a FedEx truck pulls up to my house and drops off an envelope. It said "delete blood cancer" on it, which scared the hell out of me seeing I just had a physical last week and had labs drawn.
I opened it up to find that I am a bone marrow match to a patient suffering from leukemia.
I cannot fathom that I am going to be given the opportunity to hopefully save someone's life. From what I hear it's pretty rare to find a match.
I do not want to get my hopes up too high because the woman I spoke with from the transplant center stated that 7 out of 8 transplants are canceled due to the patients deteriorating condition.

I faxed all my paper work today and have to get my labs drawn again and then hopefully the surgery will be scheduled for June.
So I'll be on pins and needles for a couple of weeks awaiting the green light. Keep you're fingers crossed for me!

Thanks for letting me share.

Bob, that is amazing. In the minds of the "old guard" I'm sure you were already on a very short list of the truly good guys around here, and this gesture serves to show the younger crowd here what a good man you are. I really hope you get the chance to change someone's life.

Bob, I'm damn proud of you my friend! Being the father of a girl who was given Chemo for over NINE HUNDRED consecutive days when she was 3 years old after having been diagnosed with Leukemia, all I can say is THANK YOU. I actually have tears in my eyes while I type this.

What you are doing for that patient and his/her family will be remembered forever!

    STAY HEALTHY!

Doug, I was hesitant about posting this since it was off topic but I thought about you and made up my mind to share this.
I'm praying nothing happens to prevent this from happening.
Thanks for the kind words, Doug. It means a lot coming from someone who is too familiar with this.

    Thank you as well Allen!

Geordie, you have always been one of the best here, and I'm proud to consider you my friend! Thanks for the words of encouragement.

Good for you! I have been giving blood since the '80's (I have the good O) and now I do Apheresis. I get tired and thirsty but it's worth it. I get to watch movies while I'm doing it! Being a blood donor is just filling up the gang bangers after the Friday night fights. Just kidding. Please give blood!

A very noble gesture, and you are allowed to post this kind of OT thread any time, at least in my book.

Incredible gesture! I have heard from one who did how painful it was even being a donor, as I'm sure you're well aware. I'll happily commend anyone who does it, knowing what they're getting into. I hope I would do the same with no regrets if given the opportunity.

Terrific news! I hope you are able to help the woman. How did this matching happen? Did you have to request it or was it automatically done?

Thanks everybody! I appreciate the kind words.

slum22, I went to a benefit for a friend of mine whose son had leukemia back in 2007. There was a blood and marrow drive at the benefit that I took part in.

what a great thing you are doing.my late sons kidneys saved 2 lives and I am proud to say they were both successful.I too was a perfect match for a bone marrow transplant however one of my medications I was taking at the time disqualified me.I feel bad everytime I think about it.I have re entered the donor list however I am not sure If I will qualify since I had Mersa in 2008.

    GOD BLESS YOU FELLA.

That is awesome. My 46 year old cousin died earlier this year from leukemia that was diagnosed just 12-14 months earlier. He was a twin, but unfortunately his brother wasn't an exact match, nor was anyone else in the family. Being from Washington, he was in the right area and was being treated at the Fred Hutch/SCCA in Seattle. They tried several other options that would not involve a marrow transplant, but in the end nothing worked.

I hope you have the opportunity to make that difference for some one.
