55 Bowman Mantle - NOT MANTLE?

I'm sorry, but I just have never thought it's Mantle pictured on his 55B card. Look at his other portraits, be it the 52T, 54B, 53T-- the space between the eyebrows, the sharpness of the tip of the nose, the width of the chin, it just doesn't look like The Mick to me at all. Never has. Anyone else feel the same way? Photos and angles and one's own eyes can be deceiving of course.

  • i have never liked that card - partly the borders just never did it for me
and partly, yes, it dont look like him.
i think the airbrushing on the photo distorted that all american face.

it looks like that funky effect in movies when they put an actor's face on a younger body - like Jeff Daniels in the Tron reboot.

They should have airbrushed out the guy behind him like Topps did on his 57 card. In both cases ,who is that other guy ? image

    Matt,

Since I got back into collecting in the 80s, those were always my exact thoughts. I never thought it looked like him and thus I was never interested in the card. However, over the past several years, for some reason, that card has grown on me and I will eventually pick up a nice looking lower graded one.

Edited to add: BTW Matt, did you ever notice that his birth date on the back in incorrect?

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

Look at those ears. Micks left ear sticks out more than the right one. Thats how you can tell that it is in fact Mantle on the 1955 Bowman card.

It's kind of a running joke over at Net54, but the ears are one of the main aspects a photo recognition expert will observe first. A person's ears do not change much, if at all, over the course of a lifetime, and they have enough small details to be a distinguishing feature. So, yep, good catch there... it's all about the ears!

There has been a few times I've shot ad campaigns with babies, and then we have to go back months later to figure out what baby was used in the final shot so they can get paid their bonus. Fastest and surest way to figure out who is who is to match up the ears.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's
