Junk Wax Rip. 1991 Upper Deck Football

The first box I ever bought. I remember sneaking it by my parents up to my bedroom to open in secret. I was 11 and I knew they would kill me if they found out I spent my allowance on a box of cards. (I wonder if they would have been less mad if I snuck porn up to my room)

To me, this is one of the tragic sets of the junk era. It just kicked the a## of Topps and Fleer in terms of photography. It was the first set of football that Upper Deck produced and it was just as nice as 1989 baseball IMO. At $10 a box at a recent card show, I couldn't resist...

I remember this game. 1990 AFC Divisional Playoff Game vs the Buffalo Bills. Lost 35-45 I believe.

Jackpot! 2nd pack! This box was worth the $10

I had the same exact thrill when I pulled the Emmitt Smith TODAY that I had when I was 11. Just beautiful photography…

…and 1 more to enjoy the sights of early 90's football..

Thanks for looking. Fun Rip. No Holograms in this box.

I have that Marino card, it's a cool pic. That Aikman one looks cool too. Thanks for sharing the rip.

Nice rip. I still can remember the anticipation of waiting for the 1989 Upper Deck baseball set to come out. Some stores had displays out be fore the cards were released.
  • My buddy and I ripped a few boxes of these back when they came out. I was trying to get him back into it junior year of high school. Figures...
Still have about two sets. Love this issue.

Back in 1991, when I had heard Upper Deck was going to produce a football set, I thought "No Way!!" And when they came out they did not disappoint, even at $30 a box at the time. It was a very sharp set of cards.

In my former auto industry life, I was on a supplier factory tour and saw that the plant manager had 5 cases each of Upper Deck Football and Basketball in his office. I asked him if he was a collector and he said he wasn't, he bought them from a buddy who was dealer as an investment. He planned to keep them for his kids' college fund.

First, nice friend. Second, I hope his kids got scholarships because those cases wouldn't even pay for a couple of books.

At $10 and under for "junk wax" you can't go wrong if only for nostalgia. Hard to believe for the price of 3 packs today you can get that kind of entertainment out of a 23 year old box. I too can't resist these boxes at that price.
