Modern Hockey Rookies

My collection is mostly focused on Hockey HOF Rookies / HOF players - I'm slowly putting together that registry set but it's going to be a long process. I'm only at 16%/28% respectively with lots of large ticket cards to go.

While I work on that I wanted to start buying some modern rookies but not 100% sure where to start. I know that the Young Guns are always popular, but outside that set what should I be collecting? Is the next best set SPA Future Watch Auto's, with the best issue being The CUP Auto Rookie Patches?

I find the registry confusing as they seem to mix the rookies between different issues, for some it's SPA, others Young Guns, there is some Black Diamond mixed in there.

Who collects modern hockey rookies and what issues do you target? Do you follow the registry?

I think you've got a good handle on it. The UD Young Guns traditionally seem to be the standard go-to RC for most, which is a nice mid-level price range compared to the budget issues (score, mvp, victory) and some of the scarce low-serial#/low print-run premium ones. The SP's are a good 2nd option, and then I think it blurs a bit as to what might be 3rd, between black diamond, cup, etc.

I'm doing the autographed modern rookies now and I'm pretty much exclusively sticking to Young Guns. I did Patrice Bergeron's 2003 Topps instead of Young Guns by mistake at a signing and there are a couple of guys (Tim Thomas) that don't have Young Guns. But if available I think it's the card.

Thanks guys, the Young Guns are pretty affordable, I get can get Price in a 10 for under 120 bucks where as his The Cup auto patch card is like 2K so that may be the way I go.
  • As a hockey rookie collector, I like the SP authentic for the on card autos and serial numbers. The SP Auth is considered a middle end tier product.
For some reason, there just seems to be so many young guns in PSA 10s. Are the young guns even considered SP
when we don't know how many are even produced?

I'd consider going with OPC as those are the ones you should bet collecting for 70s and 80s.

I'm all over those, wondering more about 2000 and up.

Umm, Tim Thomas definitely has a Young Guns card. Linky

Do you ever get into the Euro-issue RC's that can pre-date the North American, NHL issues by several years?
