Set break question...looking for opinions

A card shop that I know will be breaking a 1986/87 Fleer basketball set and is charging 15 bucks per slot. There will be one slot for each of the cards in the set (including stickers) with all slots randomized. I looked up the SMR pricing for this set and found, that at a minimum of a PSA 8 condition there are only 13 cards in the set worth over the 15.00 starting point of this break which includes the checklist. If you include the stickers that will add a few more over this threshold.

Here is my question......Would any of you take this shot? For the potential of blowing 15 bucks on a Jordan rookie I am considering it but wanted to know what others felt.

Here is the photo they posted of this set.

I wouldn't go crazy, but 1 or 2 slots for a shot at a Jordan rookie doesn't seem out of line.

The offer is 15 bucks for one slot and 40 for three. I Just am not sure if I want to pull the trigger on this one.

this seems like a fun way to spend $40 to me.

hey with a 3/144 chance at an 8ish jordan, you aren't making a bad bet anyway. 2% shot.

Personally, I like the Jordan rookie lottery ticket better than a high end modern box.

The downside (in terms of dollars) is certainly less, the upside (in terms of percentage) is just as good or better, and I suspect the odds of hitting the jackpot are higher too.

If you're sure the Jordan is legit, $40 for three rolls of the dice seems reasonable and a bit of fun. I'm sure we've all spent $40 on far worse things.

I'd be in for $40. No question. A pack cost 500-700. Cost/card seems reasonable.

How is this thing being run? I would assume that once all slots are sold the cards will be given out at random. Is there a time limit as to when all slots need to be sold? What if all slots are not sold? This is a good way for the dealer to turn a $800-1000 set into $2000.

Assuming you can view all the cards before hand, all will be guaranteed genuine, not a bad risk. How will the drawing be conducted? Will it be a "live" drawing where all can attend? Let us know how you do if you decide to participate.

i agree, fun way to spend $40 and who knows

and if you pull the barkley or ewing, you've got your money back
  • $40 is a good deal. 10 packs of modern stuff or a few chances at a Jordan.

    Love it.

I participated in something like this a while back and it was awesome.

No question 3 for 40 is a deal.....I would take a few of the 3 for 40, if it were up to me.

Let us know how it works out.
