It's getting tougher and tougher out there

It is poppages like these that make you just want to throw in the towel. Sigh

  • I find the best way to deal with bad poppage is to own some CLCT stock.

That way you feel better when you do some crackouts, knowing that CLCT will be making more money off you, thus you will
eventually make more off their stock.

I do have some CLCT and, yes, it has appreciated quite nicely due in part to my discovery of grading. lol

  • Hey, at least your grader got the memo about 8.5s.

Were those the 1980 Topps out of the vending rip? If so, I would have thought for sure that Mike Norris card would 10 it looked absolutely perfect and it's a pop 0 right now with 10's. Tough break indeed. Those cards were very sharp if they are the same I saw in the other thread.

Yep. these are the ones pictured from the vending rip. And, as I posted on another thread, the Mota RB got a 9 and the Henderson RC got an 8. My last couple of subs have been rough.

And it's true - good subs never have 8.5s. Bad subs always seem to have a few.

OK Ok...maybe there is some black stuff going on under the position if you really magnify the thing.

By the way, I have to thank whoever figured out the Photobucket IMG code shortcut on the other thread. It is a breeze to post now. Thanks!!

I think that's an accurate grade. Sharp in most other respects-- especially the lovely centering I must add-- but has print issues all over the place. Underneath the "A's," on his cheek, in the blue sky, all around the position banner. That's not even high magnification and it leaps out, so I wouldn't feel like I was slighted on that one for sure. Definitely not an injustice there.

OK I'll buy that. Here's another low-pop I thought might do better (because I'm a glutton for punishment).

I'd say same thing; tremendous on the centering and corners. No tilt at all. But the surface killed it. Not just in the photo but all along the top white border there appears to be toning issues.

I can see some of the 80s cards reminding me of the 75s and minis, with certain cards having major surface issues right off the press. Would be a freak anomaly to not have the flaw. Like smudging on a Koufax or 76 Brett and the black line on almost every Bird/Magic.

I think we got the same grader...Though I do agree with DM23HOF that the Norris has print problems along the border and the Oberkfell has too much snow to 9. However, no reason those 8.5s shouldn't 9. And I'd say the Norris is no worse than the Kaat that 9'd. That's the inconsistency that drives me nuts.

Sigh, somewhere I have a Gem Mint '80 Ozzie I have to take out and admire with a newfound appreciation.
