1970 Topps - Worthy of a Bump?

Hey Guys - as unopened becomes harder to come by and often commanding prices that are rip-prohibitive, my thoughts have turned to building a serious high-grade 1970 Topps set.

So I thought I would post some bump candidates for your perusal/opinions. All the cards I'll post are fine in their given grades but would be even finer with a bump up!

To start - Nolan Ryan. The back is great. Thoughts?

Is there a slight fold in the LL corner? If not, that card could bump up to an 8.5 or 9. Very nice card!!!

Nik ... I agree with the above comment. Also, it might be the scan, but is there the slightest touch to the top left and lower right corners? Is that dust from the scanner or snow on the card above his glove and between his face and glove?

It is a real nice card! Best of luck! Looks like it's going to be a very high grade set based upon this example.

Next up - Orlando Cepeda - tough in a 10. I have 3 9s and this is probably the nicest. I am not discounting for the white line as I have seen/gotten 10s with the white line before. Note - the white speck on his cheek/jaw is not on the card.

And another for consideration - there are no 10s.

I think the 9's are worth a try to bump to 10's. Nice cards!

Nik ... Both nice cards. Wondering if the slight diamond cut on the Cepeda kept it in a "9"?

The L/R centering at the top of the card is ~45/55 and at the bottom it's ~55/45. Would this come into play when they grade?

Uhlaender - Don't think you will find any looking much better than that. Would the slight rough cut on the top of the left side come into play when considering a "10"?

I think both PSA 9's should be reviewed for the upgrade. You can tell how fresh the card is just from the scan. The Ryan looks very nice too but I think the grade is correct on that one. Would not be shocked to see the Ryan in a PSA 8.5

No chance on the Cepeda, imo. You have a shot on the Uhlaender.

Off-topic, but Ted Uhlaender's daughter was a skeleton racer who competed in the Sochi games.

Agree with Tim about the Cepeda.

Don't know about the Uhlaender. If this flaw has kept the rest out of a 10 holder, then probably no shot. Otherwise, great card.

I think that's a scratch on the Uhelander holder but I don't have the card in hand to see.

It would really be nice to get this baby in a 10. But I suppose it's a tad low.

Nice Pena, but the print dots on the upper right border could be a problem for a bump.

Yep that too now that I see it...But still nice in a 9. Real tough card.

All of the Uhlander cards I have have the line like yours. It's not a scratch. The line goes basically all of the way across the blue background of the card.

Edited to add: the more I look at the "line" the more it looks like a contrail from a jet.

Wow so the line is something actually in the picture?

Have you tried having a buddy wrap up some of your cards in cellophane so you can rerip them? As long as you don't know which cards and order they selected, it would be like opening a fresh pack!

"Wow so the line is something actually in the picture?"

Upon further review I'm going to back off my contrail theory. I found at least one of my cards where the line is evident across the eye brow area. It's possibly a printing error but
definitely not a scratch on your card.
