1986 Topps Football BBCE Rip

A few weeks ago, I jumped at the chance to buy 2 wax boxes of 1986 Topps Football off BBCE. They were the ones from the unopened case. I wanted to open one now, and open one with my son when he turns 18. (He's 3 right now)

I wish I took a picture of the inside of the box. I've never opened a wax box that had the packs so neatly stacked and in perfect shape. The gum didn't even do too much damage to any of the cards. The glue stains were the worst culprits but the gum chipped right off. In other packs of 1986 Topps Football, I've had to tear off a card from the 1000 yard club card… not in this box. Everything went about as well as I could have hoped.

Anyways, I had a lot of fun. Here are some highlights… Any of them worth submitting? I have never submitted before... Some bottoms appear worn in the pictures but are fine.

Nice rip. I love the 86 set. I would sub the rice and young. The others I would only sub if you think have a shot at a 10. Did you get Fridge rookies. I'm looking for an 8

    I wouldn't sub any. It's a shame the 49ers were off centered.

    i would sub the HOFers

Here's why: When your Son is of collecting age, you'll be able to tell him that you bought the boxes from a sealed case, ripped the one box, then had those cards slabbed yourself.
Kind of like an OO (Original Owner) type of collection. Sure the cards may not get the grades that you "like", but they'll be cards you yourself pulled. To me, that means a lot.

    great set

I don't think I would sub any of them, you're just paying for an expensive holder

I think I would try to put the set together, either that or just figure out what you're missing and look for those in 15 years when you pop the next box
  • Thank you for the feedback so far. The more I look at the pictures in those cases, right below the light, I realize how bad the cards look on my computer screen vs. real life. But I trust your judgements as I never have submitted anything before and I have read about much of the disappointment from first time submissions.

eagles 33… here is The Fridge I got… it has three fish eyes on it.. left border, top border and in the name plate… plus is looks a little blurry? I'm guessing not an 8?

How about the Bruce Smith without the case under different light? The surface is really smooth (many cards had the dents and spider veins I've heard of.. My 3 John Elways looked like some kid was trying to color with crayons) You guys know more than I do…

Thanks again! Really enjoying the forum.

Nice results, I really like the Payton. Long live Sweetness image I have yet to submit anything, but I might consider subbing the Rice and Young since they are RCs. Possibly also the Payton and Montana, if you think they might pull at least a 9. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah. For some reason the perry card is tough to find in decent condition. It's not impossible but I would say its the toughest of the star/semi star rookies in the set. Actually the young is prob more difficult... The rice looks like a 7-8 to me. Tought to really tell for sure from the scan. It might not be the greatest investment.. But I would certainly include it in a special for 6 bucks.

  • Despite being one of the ugliest set designs Topps ever done the 86 set has some nice HOF Rookies.
I would be interested in any centered Mint Commons for my raw set. Send me a PM.

What's wrong with 86 Topps. Simple, big pictures, green borders to simulate lines on a football field - what's not to like.
