What is the biggest bump in grade you ever hoped for?

Have you ever sent in any cards for review that you were convinced looked 2 or more grades better than what you originally received? Have you ever thought a PSA 5 or PSA 6 deserved to be at least a PSA 8? In these instances, would you still send it in for review if an 8 would be well worth the money or would you just assume that if it received a 5 initially, that there is something you are obviously missing?

I have many wacky packages from the same collection that received grades of 8 9 and even some 10's. Yet there are a few that graded 5 and 6. I am debating as to whether or not to send in for reviews on 5's and 6's or simply send in the 8's and 9's hoping for a 1 grade bump.

Also, I have a 1987 Fleer Jordan that looks perfect to me and is centered right about 50/50 all around. There is a difference in value of almost $1400 gong to a 10. If I send it in for review would I be better off sending it by itself or with the wackies? My concern with sending them all would that the Jordan could get mired in all the rest and maybe somehow pale to other contenders for a 10.

Thanks for any input, Tom

I think hoping for a bump of anything more than 1 point is far from realistic. On the other hand, it is entirely realistic, if not probable, that there can be a 5 and a 10 in the same lot of cards.

Look closely to see what you might have missed. If you don't find anything, crack the 5s and 6s out. Not like you have downside and the upside is a far faster turnaround without the preconception of the previous grade.

I always crack, rather than review, unless I am looking for a 9 to a 10 bump (or other special high dollar/low pop circumstance).

    PSA 2.5 - PSA 6.

To be fair, the card was originally a PSA 4. It was a very nice PSA 4 graded before half-grades. It looked deserving of a bump to EX, EX-MT, so I cracked it out and submitted it with a renewal sub. Imagine my surprise when it came back a PSA 2.5. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why. A while later, I cracked it again and sent it in with another order. Came back a PSA 6. Still don't know what happened with the 2.5. So, technically a bump of 3.5 grades, in reality a (worthy) bump of 2 grades.

That sounds good and yes, I would not crack out the 9's unless they are low value 9's with big 10 upside.

What about that Jordan card? Any suggestions on submitting by itself or with the other cards?

This was graded a PSA 2.5 when I bought it. Couldn't see why so I cracked it and resubbed:

Any chance of having a speck of paper loss on the back that wasn't seen by the second grader?
  • On the Wackys if they are white backs... My guess is a surface wrinkle on the backside. In slab they are nearly impossible to see due to the texture and lack of gloss of the paper. I've had several that look like 9's or 10's and end up a 5 or 6 because I missed it and didn't see it till I cracked them out.

I can't find it if there is.
