Opinions on this Gretzky Rookie?

Hi guys, what do think about this Gretzky rookie and how it would grade out by psa? I'm having a tough time with the snow on the card and thought some of you with more experience could help me out. This card in a 7+ grade is my grail. Thanks!

Edit: Seeking opinions on additional card. See pics in post from 4/14/14 below.

Here are two of the pics from the auction. The auction has quite a few others.

I think it's a nice looking 6, but would defer to more experienced members, as I have just sent in my first sub, so my "skills" are still a work in progress.

I think the top left corner, some snow, and white notch in the blue on right side will keep it out of a 7. I feel like this card gets graded tough too.

    Good luck whatever you decide.

Thanks guys. Appreciate any other opinions...less than an hour for me to decide whether to pursue this card...

I don't like the right edge. I would be surprised if this card graded, let alone got a 7. I would move along. Finding raw Gretzky OPC rookies that would grade a 7+ are just about impossible these days. Lots of scammers out there.

Thanks...I agree with you. Ended up passing on it....just too many questions about it at the price. I have a low grade (very low grade) Gretzky and I'll continue to search for a nrmnt or higher. I enjoy buying raw cards and submitting to PSA, but I agree it's increasingly difficult to find good candidates of this card. I think it's fun to see how things grade out.

Looking for more help in my quest for PSA 7 Gretzky rookie. Do you guys think this would cross to PSA 7? Obviously the seller thinks it will...but I'm skeptical. Thanks for the help!

Would the Beckett one avoid being labelled OC by PSA?

Yes, I'd specify no qualifiers on the crossover should I acquire the card.

That beckett one is UGLY, and I don't see any rough cut either. No way this gets a PSA 7 IMO, in fact I doubt it pulls a # grade. Either mis-cut (parallelagram) or sheet cut.

If you want a PSA 7 then buy a PSA 7. Be patient, there are plenty out there, find a nice one. One "miss" on a crossover or initial grade and you'll find yourself dropping PSA 8 money before you get your 7.

A PSA 7 sells for $600-$900. If you find a nice one you shouldn't mind bumping up to that $900 number. There won't be a hoard of them found, it'll continue to climb over time. And who knows, if you find a nice 7, it may bump to an 8 if you give it a try. Nothing to lose there but a few bucks in grading fees. That Beckett card would never bump. Centering is the key here. Without that it'll never have a shot at bumping.

Just curious why you think this card won't grade. Fake?
I'm bumping this because I'm looking at the card in person tomorrow morning.

Not exactly sure what he was eluding to, but I don't think it's fake. Just a lot of little things add up...top right corner, the edges, the snow, the red print dots in the stands to the right of Gretzky. I do like that it's a first print edition. But you have to wonder...this seller seems to deal in a lot of cards...why wouldn't he (or any previous owners) have it graded?

Just my guess as to what was being eluded to, with only one border rough cut it could be trimmed.
  • I didn't think of trimmed. That's a possibility.

I was wondering if the seller did try to have it graded already.
He claims that he's going to get it graded by KSA if it doesn't sell which means it could be a PSA reject.

Mapleleaf, curious how the card looked in person and if you bought it?
  • I was away for the weekend and looked at this card on Thursday. It was slightly more narrow than any of the cards in the set. When I lined up the print lines, you could see that the left side was about 1/32 smaller than it should be. I hadn't brought my magnification equipment so I couldn't verify that it had been trimmed but most likely it would come back from PSA as Min size or EOT. Even if it did get graded, there was a stain above the L in Oilers so it would have come back as a low grade card. It looked like a drop of tea or coffee that had been wiped up. It doesn't show in the picture. 3 of the corners were worn. Two bottom and top right. Also the top of the card was more narrow than the bottom which is probably why there was wear still on the bottom left corner.

I don't think the seller altered the card in any way. He's buying cards locally and reselling them. He had another Gretzky that he was very pleased with that was clearly a fake.

Interestingly, there was a call on my answering machine when I arrived home yesterday that he had sent the Gretzky in question to KSA for grading and it had come back a 7.
I'm not sure how he managed to get it mailed away and returned by Monday on a 4 day Holiday Easter weekend. Having seen KSA's graded cards I'm not surprised. The closest I've ever had one cross over to PSA was a KSA 7 1952 Parkhurst that came back a PSA 5.5 and I actually thought PSA was being generous on that one, although it was a crack and submit.
