Top 20 Football cards in the Hobby

I have the day off today and was looking thru the tops 20 sports cards in the hobby set and saw only one football card. So here is my response to the baseball heavy set.

Would just like to say that this set is impossible to make a checklist for without leaving some major players out. I ran out of room, so modern cards didn't make it.

This is just my opinion and I am not sending this to PSA to make a set, just needed something to do on my day off. Would love to hear your thoughts.

If your only going mainstream, I think your close..... Except I dont think ollie matson belongs in there.....

If including all football you must add the N162 Beecher, Mayo Dunlop, Spalding Grange, and a few others.

I agree with Dave. I'd put the Mayo Dunlop in over the Matson. I'd also consider replacing Bradshaw with Montana. Great start though!
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Nice call on most of those. The Matson is definitely one of the nicest looking cards. Some others that might be able to squeeze in:

    1935 National Chicle CLARKE HINKLE
    1950 BOWMAN MARION MOTLEY
    1963 FLEER LANCE ALWORTH
    1950 BOWMAN Y.A. TITTLE

Great start. In my opinion the following need to be added.

    1952 Bowman Large Jim Lansford
    1981 Topps Joe Montana
    1935 Wheaties Don Hutson
    1888 N162 Beecher
1894 Mayo Cut Plugs John Dunlop
    1926 Spalding Red Grange

I would remove the following cards.

1955 Topps Don Hutson for the '35 Wheaties
    1971 Bradshaw for Montana
    1955 Four Horsemen
    1948 Babby Layne
1950 Otto Graham (sad as I type this)
    1952 Ollie Matson

Just my opinion but I love the topic

I have always thought the 1962 Topps Fran Tarkenton card did not get enough respect. He is one the QBs that chance the position and his card is extremely tough in high grade. JMHO

    I think this is close.

Lots of ways to slice this up, how do you judge what is a "Top" card? Is it based on which are the most expensive like Nagurski, or the rarest and toughest to get like Dunlop or Spalding Grange, or iconic as in what you would see splashed on an auction house catalogue cover like Namath or Jim Brown?

No one answer is right, so a blend of all of it?

For example, Beecher is top for the hobby, but not for the sport. Montana is top for the sport, but not the hobby.

Good list, but I think I'd replace the Payton with a 1950 Bowman Joe Perry, the Staubach with a 1963 Fleer Alworth, and the Butkus with a 1962 Topps Ditka.

I'd love to make it a Top-25 and include icon cards AND the best players. Accordingly, here's my list for consideration (as any list that does not mention one of the greatest defensive players ever, would be incomplete -- Deacon Jones):

1894 N302 MAYO CUT PLUG ANONYMOUS JOHN DUNLOP NNO
    1926 SPAULDING RED GRANGE NNO
1933 GOUDEY SPORTS KINGS JIM THORPE 6
1933 GOUDEY SPORTS KINGS KNUTE ROCKNE 35
1935 NATIONAL CHICLE BRONKO NAGURSKI 34
    1935 WHEATIES DON HUTSON NNO
    1948 LEAF SID LUCKMAN 1
    1948 LEAF SAMMY BAUGH 34
    1948 LEAF CHUCK BEDNARIK 54
    1950 BOWMAN OTTO GRAHAM 45
    1952 BOWMAN FRANK GIFFORD 16
1955 TOPPS ALL AMERICAN THE FOUR HORSEMEN 68
    1957 TOPPS BART STARR 119
    1957 TOPPS JOHNNY UNITAS 138
