6 Card Mantle lot, what would you offer

I am meeting a guy later today for a group of Mantle cards, just curious as to what some of you guys would offer. They are described as vgex to excellent with no creasing except the 68 game card. These are the best pictures I have of the cards.

I'd top out at $200 (or less). Some nice centering though.

$200 would be fair. When you go see them, take them out of the screw downs to make sure there's no wrinkles hiding

+1...I've been "screwed" literally on this one before after I got home with my purchase.

Assuming they were for your collection and not to flip, you could have spent close to $375. Grading for the main 4 cards is around $25-30. In VG (which they look based on some rough corners), they sell for around $400. If they were VG-EX, they go for $500. So to flip, $200 is ok. But if you are keeping them, I could see paying $375-$400 if you don't mind VG.

$700 is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY too much money to spend, for all those cards which none appear higher than a PSA 4. Keep your money in your pocket and just move on.

Now, I'm surprised that none of you would say "Those cards are barely VG, much less VG-EX." A couple are G-VG, but $200 for the lot of them is all you'd pay? What do you suppose a VG '58 Mantle goes for on eBay? Since the miserable condition raw ones often go for more than the graded ones (sellers call raw VG Mantles EX+++), we'll use graded prices.

    1958 Topps #150 Mickey Mantle PSA 1 - $94.07, PSA 2 - $112.68, PSA 3 - $159.88

    1962 Topps #200 Mickey Mantle PSA 1 - $68.88, PSA 2 - $82.83, PSA 3 - $98.66

    1963 Topps #200 Mickey Mantle PSA 1 - $57.11, PSA 2- $80.83, PSA 3 - $100.13

    1965 Topps #3 A.L. Home Run Leaders PSA 1 - N/A, PSA 2 - $6.99, PSA 3 - $16.01

    1969 Topps #500 Mickey Mantle YL PSA 1 - $43.47, PSA 2 - $63.05, PSA 3 - $66.96, PSA 4 - $94.03

    1968 Topps Game #2 Mickey Mantle PSA 1 - $15.75, PSA 2 - $30.00, PSA 3 - $14.06

The minimum amount the seller should accept, assuming that he could throw them on eBay and get PSA 1 prices ('65 HR Leader card getting $0.00) is $281.28. If they are priced as VG (PSA 3), the maximum amount the buyer would pay would be $455.70.

Going from just the scans, the '58 and the '69 look like the best of the bunch, perhaps PSA 3's. The '62 and '63 are more likely PSA 2's. The '65 HR Leader card doesn't matter, since it's not worth anything anyway. The '68 Game card is too small to make any judgment.

I'd probably suggest an offer of $420. The seller is too high at $700 (obviously).

If you really thought they were PSA 4's (they aren't, with the possible exception of the '58), then we're getting closer to $600.

    1958 Topps #150 Mickey Mantle PSA 4 - $207.33
    1962 Topps #200 Mickey Mantle PSA 4 - $114.92
    1963 Topps #200 Mickey Mantle PSA 4 - $129.26
    1965 Topps #3 A.L. Home Run Leaders PSA 4 - $18.97
    1969 Topps #500 Mickey Mantle YL PSA 4 - $94.03
    1968 Topps Game #2 Mickey Mantle PSA 4 - $21.52

    Total: $586.03

I didn't really think they were PSA 4's....I was being generous....ONE might be a PSA 4 (the 1969)....the rest look suspect......when people ask that kind of crazy high prices.....well.......just best to walk away shaking your head.

They were all 3's across the board upon close inspection. I offered $300 and felt stretch at that. Seller was firm with his card store prices.

For those who said to offer $200, was just curious how you came up with this amount?

I came up with $375 based on VG, another came up with $420 based on a lower grade.

Also, since you said he was a dealer, maybe he uses beckett pricing. I know most people go off of past sales, but a lot of dealers just go off book prices and adjust for condition. A lot faster than checking ebay sales. Plus if you own a shop, you expect to get higher prices than Ebay a lot of the time, just like show dealers.

Based on Beckett values (not saying its the smart way, but I can see how he came up with close to $700):

1958 Mantle VG $250 Highest EBay sale $217.50
1962 Mantle VG $150 Highest Ebay sale $139.95
1963 Mantle VG $150 Highest Ebay Sale $119.95
1969 Mantle VG $70. Highest Ebay sale $82.

Those 4 are $620 basked on beckett conditional pricing. Highest ebay sales total $559. So only $60 higher than the highest price realized online. So if he overgrades, I can easily see how he hit $700.

In my experience a lot of dealers (seems like most), if they have a card priced, it's usually high beckett regardless of condition!

I think we all can agree those guys are morons. Even better the guy who prices a VG card at full book, then puts "Sale! 50% off". See it at shows all the time.

I honestly think that if a person runs to the Beckett to verify/justify a price, you can pretty much assume they either came off their meds or do not know the current market which pretty much shows how ridiculous Book Prices really are. I believe that within 5 years, the only price guides that will exist will be the online kind which can track sales more accurately, but do it in "real time". Beckett will be a dinosaur (more than it is now).

That being said, I can see where $700 would be a "full retail" type of price. I think that a $200 offer would be low, but can see realistically the $300 offer as being fair.
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

At those prices, he may not have a card store for long image
