Possible 1984 Donruss BB countefeits?

I seem to recall some talk back in the early 1990's of the strong possibility of this series known for this problem. Any truth to it? How can one detect them? Thanks.

I recall seeing counterfeit 1984 Donruss Don Mattingly cards back then. The way that I recall detecting them was the "DONRUSS" on the front of the card was blurry and difficult to read.

Yes, many of the 1984D biggest stars and, of course, the Mattingly rookie, were counterfeited by 1991. Some guy even had a print shop work up a large quantity of Mattinglys, claiming he was a relative. We used the '84D Mattingly on the cover of the Sportscard Counterfeit Detector book.

I don't have a copy of the book, so I don't recall which other cards from the set had been identified as counterfeits. I do recall the mass-produced Mattinglys were printed on a thinner stock with more of a semi-gloss front finish. All of the fakes showed rescreening of the typography.
