NGC REGISTRY SET

BEING SOMEWHAT NEW TO THE FORUM I DON'T KNOW THE PROTOCAL FOR DISCUSSING NON PCGS REGISTRY SITES BUT I WENT OVER TO THE NGC SITE........THINKING OF FINISHING OFF THE SMS DATES WITH NGC COINS SO I WOULD NOT FEEL GUILTY ADDING ALL THE PCGS STUFF. I REALLY DO LIKE NGC AND THEIR HOLDERS. I CALLED THEIR 1-800 TRYING TO GET THEIR "SCORING" ON CAMEO, DCAM, W, AND WITH CAMEO GRADES. THIS IS IMPORTANT WHEN YOUR BUY THE COIN. DOES ANYONE KNOW? WHAT IS "WITH CAMEO". PCGS GETS YA FOR ONE OR TWO POINTS ON THE CAM AND DCAM. THAT IS PRETTY EASY TO ADD UP.

JUST HAVING FUN........

O.K.......LET ME HAVE IT. I HAVE HEARD OF THE "DARK SIDE" BEFORE. DOES THAT MEAN NG(BLANK)?

  • I have a set over there. Jefferson Nickels like what you collect. NGC won't say exactly what their system is.

We did some experiments adding coins and removing them. The conclusion was that they weigh coins by how much they cost. People would enter one coin and it would beat an entire set, even an entire set with that same coin in one grade lower. After they came to realize most collectors thought that silly they said they lessened that effect somehow.

Not only do ultra cameo coins carry a lot of weight the different years carry different weights too. So just add your sets and see what happens! Actually I have a proof Roosey set there that, after I upgrade my 1960 with one on the way I wouldn't know which coin to upgrade.

HI CARL......I SEE YOUR SETS OVER THERE. VERY NICE. HAVE YOU SEEN MANY '65 TO '67 SMS JEFFERSONS OF BOTH SERVICES TO MAKE A COMPARISON?

I like the NGC Registry concept, but their set up is nowhere near as nice as CLCT's. Even though my emphasis is on PCGS coins, I do have some NGC's and I like being able to put them up without the horrible crossover hassles that I have experienced at PCGS. I know how to grade trade dollars - I know when a coin is an MS65 and I hate having to spend hundreds of dollars and have the frustration of not getting the grade. I also like the fact that a super gem common date is rewarded with market value instead of some miniscule increase in my set rating here. BUT, I do like the actual set up here and enjoy the forum. So all in all, I'm happy to participate in both.

As long as you stick with slabbed coins, you should be safe from the "Dark Side". It's that foreign stuff, aka bus tokens. Board member Askari will show up here shortly and explain further -- you know, speak of the devil. image

GQ - I was only teasing, the darkside actually refers to collecting foreign coinage. Regards Bear

    GQ,

Dark Side is non-US coins. You are (hopefully) safe from that affliction. Many people participate in both Registry's and on the boards in both places. The boards here are typically livelier, and the following there is smaller, but they are both good places.

  • I've hardly seen any '65 SMS Jeffersons in Cameo in any holder. I've seen several '67s. NGC cameos are nice looking coins for the most part. I think NGC allows slightly less contrast when giving out a Cameo. I have bunches of NGC Jeffersons, I tried to do a set in all 68 Cam. The NGC registry counts NGC and PCGS coins as equal but I'd choose my PCGS cameos over my NGC ones in every case except for 1 or 2 1980s PF 69 Ultra Cams.

  • I have 6 sets on NGC with 2 of those sets also on PCGS. A fairly significant % of higher grade auction coins are NGC. I tried the crossover act with my Peace Dollars (thanks to the kindness of David Hall) and did not prove much with the results.

I guess after 40 years of collecting them, my eye for Peace Dollars seems to calibrate better with NGC (no offense to PCGS).
I have never seen a Peace Dollar that I did not like!!
