Is it better to buy or wait ?

I was wondering if its better to wait for the grade of coin you want, or buy a grade lower just to fill the hole and move up in the registry standings and then upgrade later when your grade is available?

Your comments are welcome.

  • It is better to wait. If you buy then turn around and sell you would probably lose a little money.

I say wait. Everytime I upgrade it seems I can't give the lower grade coin away on e-bay........

Look at Mike Gilley's Morgan dollar set - with a few fillers he would blow away all the competition, but he's not going that route.

Buying fillers of common dates costs money, but of rare dates usually makes you money. Go figure image

    Walt,

Depends on your objectives. My Modern Set is 100% complete because I went with fillers. But I set rules on what could "fill." For all slots, I eventually want an MS-65 piece, but was willing to get everything in AU-58 or better to start with as long as the coin has eye appeal. In some cases, the filler coin will be there several years so I don't mind it being there. In other cases, I was able to get the coin I needed quickly, so I did not put a filler there and waited.

  • Buy the best coin you can afford, and make sure it is PQ for the grade! Don't buy fillers! Follow this doctrine, and when you do make upgrades, they will be less painful, financially.

  • Im not sure about this but it seems that if you are tied with another's GPA the person whoo registered firsrt will have position over the newer set. Does anyone know if this is correct? I have always filled my empty slots with what ever grades I had around and then took my time upgrading them later.

  • I think you are correct Larry, but that only works if you are going for a tie image

Always buy the best you can, it retains value better than the lower grade. If you need to keep looking for the same coin, what have you accomplished (besides filling the hole) ?

Don't buy fillers even holds true to the High Grades! There are MS65 and then there are screaming MS65'S!

i say wait till the grade of whatever particular coin you're looking for can be found. otherwise, for me at least, i'm just working against myself and hurrying to get 100% complete. the only set i currently have registered is modern proof jefferson's and i could be 100% by the end of the month if i wanted to, but really what's the sense in that if i plan to upgrade. just my approach. image

Buy the best coin you can afford. Simply looking for a filler will get you lost interesting fast. Do you think what you are going to do when a set is completed image

  • I saw wait. I was going to settle for a coin because I couldn't find the variety I really wanted for a long time and so I sniped an auction... unfortunately I lost regardless.

Feeling down I browsed ebay and there it was! The coin I REALLY wanted! It had the Buy It Now feature too for a good price too so I snagged it.

So wait and you will get what your coin-loving heart desires.

Darkhorse, that's a beautiful looking subway token, but which is the obverse? No dead presidents?? image

I love this from the auction description: "... if you are just looking to get into a discussion regarding my grades for argument sake, or feel that your opinion is welcome, please know in advance that it is not."
  • tsk, tsk, tsk. I thought Americans of all people would appreciate eagles on coins (the funky eagle's the reverse by the way, the wacked-out castle/lion thing is the obverse).

That's an eagle? Looks like some kind of Aztec sun-worshiping beating-heart vivisection pyramid-sacrificing rendition thing.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. Please put down the stone knife.
  • Meh, at least it's better than some ugly, ugly personification of liberty image or an even uglier president... although the luster and glare that must come from Ike's head must be unbeliveable... image

please explain, if you can, the symbolism in "the wacked out castle/lion thing" on the obverse and translate the motto or wording on the coin. what was it intended to convey to the public or the international community? i have no gripe with the coin itself, except that the obverse seems to depict a standard german motif which can be seen just as effectively on a can of lowenbrau. regarding the "ugly personification of liberty" you made reference to, there are certain things, design elements if you will, which made definite statements in regards to the country minting the coin. it seems that would be a little better way to compare the coins in question than whether or not an individual "likes" the design. as usual, just my opinion.image

Always buy the last coin first.
