Odds on this crossing to a PSA 10? 1959 Topps

I don't want to crack it out, since I'm happy to have it as an SGC 98 and have the Lionel Carter tag on it. But if I could get a PSA 10 out of it, I would do it.

Thoughts? The front is dead on, but will the back centering keep it from getting a PSA 10?

I haven't seen back centering keep anything out of a PSA10 unless actually miscut. Off the top of my head, I think the back centering only has to be 90/10 or better.

I say no due to the tilt

I agree, Front has a tilt I just can see being happy with owing if it was a 10 in my collection.
Keep it in the case and keep your money from paying trying to cross.
  • Amazing card indeed.

While I know many here look at tilt when buying a card, there is nothing in the grading standards that would detract for tilt. As long as the card doesn't exceed 60/40 centering at the worst spot on a tilted card, it can still be a PSA10. This is one instance where I wouldn't crackout, and send in as a crossover with a 10 min grade if there's enough price difference between a SGC98 and PSA10.

I would not chance it. Plus the card is perfect in that holder, the green color in the card contrasted withe black insert in the holder.

Based on measuring with a digital ruler, I get 72-28 centering on the back. A 10 needs 75-25 or better, so this one squeaks by in that regard. I definitely would not crack out such a card. Pulling a 10 on a vintage card, even a common is a tall order. Another risk is if the card is factory short. As others stated, I'd just send it in as a crossover with a min grade of 10. Nice card!

Sorry to point out the flaw of the tilt. That is the only complaint I have I guess I should have said.
Color corners look great. But Tilt bugs me.
    Great card.
I like it in the case it is with the history of the original collector.

Nothing wrong with pointing it out, it's how people here learn. I just didn't want the OP to think that would preclude it from receiving a PSA10.

I stand corrected on the PSA10 back centering standard, but have seen far worse in 10 slabs.

It really does seem like that at times. It's the most visually disturbing defect that is basically ignored by PSA.

Thanks guys - appreciate the thoughts. I wouldn't crack and resubmit - it would either cross to a PSA 10, or stay exactly as it is.

I'm in no rush but will probably send it in whenever I have some other crossovers to do.

Absolutely send it in for a crossover if you want it in a PSA holder.

It sure looks nice as it is though!!!!!

That is a beautiful card and absolutely worth of the Gem Mint holder.

That being said, PSA won't cross it to a 10 holder. It's worth a shot, but don't count on it

  • Send it in. No guts, no glory.
  • Looks great as is.

The only reason to send it to PSA in this situation is if you plan on selling it.
