Broke a few boxes yesterday

Picked up 4 boxes of 1989-90 Topps Hockey and broke them yesterday. I hadn't opened a box of these in years, and was pleasantly surprised. I pulled 10 Sakic rookies and 13 Leetch rookies. Unfortunately, the last Sakic I pulled was damaged:


I only pulled 4 Trevor Linden and 5 Gretzky's. That was surprising as well. I had fun ripping the packs and may get a couple of the rookies graded. If anyone needs any singles, PM me as I will probably just trash the commons if nobody is interested in any.

A nice thing about those small hockey and basketball card sets from the 80's is that your chance of landing the good pulls is really high. A box of 1989 Topps hockey has as many cards in it as a box of 1989 Topps baseball. Topps hockey set is 198 cards and Topps baseball set is 792; therefore, chances for good cards is high with hockey.

Good luck with the Sakic grades. It is surprisingly tough to get a 9 or 10 from that particular set.

Definitely a fun rip, I broke two cases worth of 89-90 Topps hockey wax a couple years ago and pulled zero PSA 9 or PSA 10 Sakic rookies.
PSA made a small fortune on all the PSA 8 Sakic rookies they graded from me.

Yeah I can see what you guys mean. I saw it all in these boxes. Terrible top to bottom centering. Some were cut so bad that there was no blue border on top of the card. Also had a lot of cards with wax staining and some with staining where the gum was sticking to the card. Also had some with fish eyes and other printing defects. Even had a Tom Barrasso that had a tear in one of the corners. I guess quality control wasn't good back in 89. I doubt any of my Sakic or Leetch cards are 10's. Still new to sending in cards to be graded, but I think I have a couple 9's. All in all, I got the boxes cheap, less than $1 a pack, so can't complain.
