I guess since Bill James said he is the worst, that counts for something. His career numbers were not that impressive, but he did have a little stretch where he may have been one of the couple best pitchers in baseball. I'll pick a guy whose career numbers dwarfed Marquard's but mainly becasue he pitched into his early 70's - Phil Niekro. I was never terribly impressed with him growing up. There would never have been a time when he was mentioned in the same breath as Gibson, Seaver or Carlton as one of the best in the NL.
