Unopened Topps BB wax prices

Off the charts! $2,200 for a 78' box on EBay?! If I'm not mistaken they were going for $800 about a year ago on BBCEXCHANGE. I've been a little out of the loop in the past year or so, but the current prices are ridiculous. Has the unopened market gone bonkers or is it a case of unopened material drying up? Love to hear some other opinions. I think it's just a sellers market.

There have been many threads discussing the unopened market's meteoric rise as of late. This thread is probably the most extensive discussion. Enjoy!

  • I've been following these prices also and I think there a bit high and bound to level off. Yes there is a shortage of quality material but I don't think its as bad as the perception. I can't fault BBCE as there material is usually good and boxes with their seal often command a premium, plus their a business, they can set their prices as high as they like. That being said, I'm not afraid to buy boxes from other sources either and I also find you can often find boxes cheaper at shows. This past weekend for example, I bought from a dealer at the Strongsville, Ohio show. 1985 Donruss $60, 1985 Topps $100, 1984 Fleer $100. Granted these are not as rare as the earlier topps boxes but I still think those prices are a bit high, especially the 1977 through 1983 Topps wax boxes.

I'm a rip-rip-ripper. I have 5 packs of 1982 Topps football coming and those won't stay sealed for more than 5 minutes once I get my hands on them. There is a fair number of collectors like me, and as we open this product that dwindles the supply of unopened and drives the prices up. Sort of a catch 22 for me; I realize that the more I (and others like me) open packs, the more expensive it becomes for me to buy more 1970's and early 80's packs. But to stay on topic, I think prices will only continue to rise. It's middle school economics, suppy and demand. They're not printing any more, so the supply is constantly dwindling. Meanwhile, the demand will remain strong. Won't surprise me at all if that same 1978 box is over $3,000 in 12 months, and stays there.

I think the prices for boxes are about 20% over what their final resting place for a while will be. If you look at the iniventory on BBCE, almost all the early 80's stuff had sold out pretty quick. Now they have had some 82's for a while now at the current price. I think it is levelling off for a while, at least for the 1981-1985 era.
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
  • I think the 80's are leveling off or have leveled off. But I think we still have some room in the seventies. Believe me, if any early to mid 70's show up on bbce at the previous high, they won't last a day. They just don't show up. Late 70s last maybe two days. Ha. Right.

I still think the early 1980's product still have room to run. With late 1970's-1980 boxes going into four digits, I can see more collectors turning to 1981-1985 (maybe 1986) boxes to get their fix. Relatively speaking the 1981-1985 product wasn't as overproduced or hoarded like the 1986+ stuff. The hobby was growing back then but hadn't exploded to the mainstream yet.
