Billy Donovan Cards

Do any exist that show Donovan as a player? Couldn't find any on eBay. Yeah, yeah there are other places to look. Just wondering if any basketball collectors out there are aware of any cards showing him as a player

There's a 1991-92 Providence #22 Billy Donovan, after he played there, but I don't know if it shows him as a player or if he was ever a coach there.

He only played at PC, as the all american PG on the team Pitino took to the final four. He never coached there. Was that a team issue? If not, who produced it? And where did you find out about it?

I would guess the only set he could be in as a player would be Fleer 87 or 88, but I don't believe he is in either.

Went to the same High School as Billy. However, he was 7 years behind me.

He definitely has cards, but the OP was looking for a card when he was a player. He played in 44 games for the KNICKS in '87-'88 with minimal success.

From Beckett.com: This 24-card retrospective set features the all-time great basketball players of Providence. The sets were originally available direct from the school for 7.00 postpaid. The set was produced by Ballpark Cards, and each card measures the standard size. The fronts feature a mix of black and white action or posed player photos enclosed by an orange border. The words "Providence Friars" appear at the top superimposed over an orange basketball. In black lettering on a gray background, the horizontally oriented backs have collegiate statistics, pro stints, and awards received. The card numbers appear in a circle at the bottom right.

Thanks guys. Kyle, that's fantastic info! The set sounds hard to find, but I'm definitely adding it to the top of my wish list. I don't generally collect basketball cards, but recently decided to take on a small project and obtain one card of every Providence player since 1980 who went on to play in the NBA (however briefly). Primary goal is a card of them in their PC uniform, but in cases when I can't find one, NBA RCs will do. I already have Austin Croshere and God Shammgod. Thanks for the lead on this set. I should be able to cross several names off my list, including Otis Thorpe, Donovan, Eric Murdock and Marty Conlon.

Best of luck in your quest and I'll see if I have any from this set in my BkB monster boxes, but highly doubt it. This may be one of those short print regional sets that pops up only every few years.

I found a Donovan from that set with a mashed corner that sold on eBay feb 2nd for only a couple of bucks. So even though the set is scarce I expect it'll be affordable. If you see it for sale anywhere, please give me a shout. If you hadnt guessed yet, I grew up in RI, and friars were my number one basketball team, more so than the celtics.

Wow.. I didn't think i would come across a another person that collect PC players. I have a list ill post when I get him of all the PC rookie cards. I went after any factory auto cards if they existed... And tried to find a card in the uniform. Marques Bragg has a 1991 court side that I was surprised to find.. Never knew he was drafted. I used Donovan's providence card.. But he is also on the 87 pocket schedule with panini that looks like a card. Bgs grades them. I'll dig them up and post scans if you are interested. Can't wait to get a cotton card.

Murdock has a factory auto from court side too I think. It was the most expensive one I think. I paid like 30 bucks for it. My favorite is the shammgod scorecard auto. Loved shammy. I'm in NYC this weekend and sickened they aren't playing ucon at msg tonight

This set is quite common at the annual Cranston Show in RI, most of the local dealers have these sets for about $5. I bought mine there a few years ago, and see them there every year.
    Good luck!

    Hey Doug
I also went to St. Agnes and Billy was a Senior when I was a Freshman --- I was able to see a bunch of his games that year --- awesome team.

First Saturday in February each year, usually it is Super Bowl weekend.

This is the Friar checklist I used. If there was a factory auto option that was what I used. BGS slabs pocket schedules. I got a john lenihan pocket schedule since he doesn't have any cards. They actually look just a card slabbed. Most of the autos are less than 3 bucks on eBay. The Murdock was the only one that was expensive. I'll look to see if I have any doubles but I didn't really buy any big lots. I just kinda picked up one at a time on eBay. Good luck.
