The shows in our area offer $10 off a certain dealers tables. The promoter picks a ticket telling you which dealer won and then they pick a ticket for the winner. i won twice. Both times I had to spend more money to buy something that I wanted at their table. Money I probably would not have spent if I didn't win.
I didn't actually win it, my little sister did. She was 8 or 9. I had set up at a show and my mom dropped her off with me for a few hours. To keep her busy, I gave her a stack of entry forms. She had to have filled out at least 50. It wasn't really a shock when they pulled one.
As a 12 year old in 1989 I won a wax box of '89 Donruss plus five '89 Fleer wax packs from a known "Rick Face" box. Didn't hit the Face but I'm sure I scored some Griffeys, Sheffields and Ricky Jordans from the Donruss.
October 1990. My 8 year old nephew at the time (with me entering him) won 50 1990 Score rookies. The lot was 25 Roger Salkeld and 25 Jeff Jackson. Those never paid off
When I was a kid going to shows in the late 80s, I would always look for the dealer with the dice game. If you rolled all 1s or all 6s you got a top prize. I walked up to a table and bought 1 roll of the dice for maybe 25 or 50¢. Couldn't believe it, but I rolled 1 on all five dice. I ended up winning a 1978 Topps Eddie Murray rookie. The look on the guys face was priceless.
The best...I was at a show in the mid 90's and some guys talked me into a pack wars thingy for 1995 Signature Rookies Titan product. I had no clue what it was and wound up winning damn near the whole box for a $20 buy in(I think boxes cost $80). The other three guys were muttering about how that sucked.
Worst...pretty sure I won a pack of 1987 topps baseball....a product described as finding hay in a haystack.
Shortly after getting home from the 2011 National in Chicago, I got a notice from Fed Ex to come pick up a package. When I did, I read the letter attached that said I was the grand prize winner from Heritage Auction and enclosed was a new IPad.
"You know we just don't recognize the most significant moments of our lives while they're happening. Back then I thought, well, there'll be other days. I didn't realize that that was the only day."
At the 2000 National, I won a prize pack from a distributor by being a lucky person selected who was carrying one of their bags. It had a large framed litho of all Mantle's regular issue Topps cards, the current Beckett Baseball Almanac, a box of Dragonball'z cards, 2 Star Wars gaming decks, a variety of UltraPro supplies, and I think one or two other things. Total retail value was about $120. For promoter (rather than vendor) drawings, I won the big door prize 2 months in a row at a local hotel show in 2002 - one month was a box of 2002 Topps BB, and the next was a Kobe jersey card that booked at $80.
