Went back to coin store to trade comics & cash for cards (Yaz/Staubach/Kurri RCs)

So I made a follow up trip to the coin store after last weeks promise to bring in more stuff for me. This time I brought some stuff for him too. A few years back a co-worker was getting rid of some comics and gave me 4 boxes. I cherry picked what fit my collection and have been sitting on the other 3 boxes for some time, not wanting to chuck them, but knowing they'd be a tough sell. Decided to offer them up in a trade, and start the day by hooking him up. I traded all 3 boxes, maybe $100 worth (but a tough 100) for a 89-90 OPC Hockey set worth about $10. I got the space back and a little good will for the next phase of the trip.

Now onto what he brought for me. No 70s-80s sets or unopened, though he said he has more to go through. He did however bring in a stack of raw cards for me to sift through. Good cards, many with issues. I pulled aside what I liked and we bargained (him using eBay and me using VCP) and this is the result. I think I won as we ended up using VCP prices minus grading fees plus discount.
Side Note: my VCP subscription was only intended to be a 1 month trial while I was on a buying spree, but I've renewed it and it pays for itself if buying regularly.
I left behind a 71 Bradshaw that appeared short, an 80 Henderson a 7 on a good day, 3 81 Montana's one of which might 7.5, the other 2 were rough, and a 57 Brooks Robinson, maybe a 3 and OC and other assorted 70s BB, FB, and BK like 72 Plunkett and Unitas, 75 Theismann, also an 85 Puckett and some heavily trimmed, punched and ripped Goudey and tobacco cards.
First Lot: paid $58
All 4 corners touched, one more than others and OC

These are pretty clean. I think easy 8s

Kareem has a soft bottom right but otherwise nice. Hank is OC but otherwise nice.
Second Lot: The Yaz Lot - he wanted $60, I offered $42 to make it $100 out the door. Sold.
Good centering on the RC but some soft corners, PD, and small corner crease. Still couldn't leave it behind. The rest were essentially throw ins.

And instead if using Square to pay, I taught him about PPGift. Great Sunday.

It's a lost part of collecting for many.
Most, if not all of these will remain raw and part of my raw PC.
I spent $100, talked shop for a few hours, and left with some cool cards, a story and a smile.

<< <i>You may struggle to get your grading fees back if the Kurri and Gretzky come back less than 9s. >>
+1. I picked up a PSA 10 Kurri for $9.99 from 4SC (actually, the only card I have ever purchased from them to date). The problem with the Kurri and Gretzky is that darn "T-O-P-P-S"on them. O-Pee-Chee will get your grading fees back, but anything in the 1st series of 1981 Topps was DP'd and therefore not worth much. The 2nd series was split between East & West distribution release, so those can be alright if graded high. Personally, I wouldn't even consider sending the Kurri in unless it is a sure thing 10 (a 9 sold a couple weeks ago for $3.92). Gretzky has to be at the very least an 8.5 to even bother with it.
