Crossovers for submission

In the process of submitting KSA and Beckett graded hockey cards to PSA to regrade in PSA holders. Question to the forum is, am I better off sending these cards to PSA in their original holders or breaking them out and sending them in raw. If i was going to break them out of the original holder, what is the easiest way to get the card out without damaging it?

You're definitely better off cracking them out. I've never opened a KSA or Beckett case, so perhaps someone else can speak to how to do it without damaging the card. Just a word of caution, there's a lot of trimmed/overgraded/sheet-cut OPC hockey in KSA and Beckett holders. If you have an OPC card with smooth edges, odds are it will not grade. Hopefully that's not the case. Best of luck.

When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
  • The cards going to PSA for grading are from 1965-66 Topps hockey...as far as breaking the cases they are in, I have heard a dremel tool works well..how to do it without damaging the cards is the big issue...as I'm not much of a handyman.

I use a sharp knife and a small screwdriver. I carefully score the "slot" where the two pieces of the holder come together a few times and then push the screwdriver into the "slot" and twist. I move around the holder doing this until it starts to come apart.

    BE CAREFUL!

On the subject of crossing out, I have been obliterated on a couple of cards at PSA going from 8's and 9's to 4's and 5's. If you are afraid of this happening, you might want to try the crossover route first.

If you simply want the card in a PSA holder and won't be to disappointed if it grades MUCH lower, then crack it out for sure.

  • So, are you suggesting I leave the cards in their holder and see what grades I get?

or, Am I better to bust them out of their holders and send the cards in raw?

I had a couple of bad experiences with crack outs. Most threads on the subject have been pro-crack and resub as their goal is to have PSA look at the card without another graders opinion there for them to (supposedly) lower.

The items I sent in were rare items and I "needed" them in PSA holders so I simply cracked them out and submitted them and was DESTROYED, had a card go from a 9 to a 5 and an 8 to a 4.

I recently picked up a card that I already have in my set and its graded MINT by SGC. This time I decided I would try to get a high grade (I specified the lowest grade I would accept, lower than MINT) as it won't do me any good if it grades below the card I have in my set. This is another hard to find card. I am hoping (perhaps misguidedly) that the 96 the card got rated will influence the PSA grader, I couldn't live with a 4 or 5 on this one.

My thoughts are; if you have a card you want to cross over at a high grade, you might want to try the crossover service because once you crack it out your card may NEVER get that original grae (or possibly even close) again. You can always crack it out later.

There are a couple of examples on youtube that show how to crack out cards. Here is one of the links. I don't know to make it a link, but you copy and paste it in the web browser. I hope this helps.

  • Cracked about 12 cards out of their holders (Beckett and KSA), worked out just fine. Just snapped the top corner off the holders with a set of pliers, and then ran a screwdriver on the top edge, prying upward on a flat surface. The new found cards will be sent in for grading to PSA within the next few weeks.
