1975 Topps Mini Rip **New Scans are up. How about some grading opinions**

Aside from the occasional modern box for my son, I generally don't rip anything and certainly nothing vintage. Due to space issues, a good amount of my collection resides in my son's room. I recently sold a number of 75 mini packs on the BST I acquired from group breaks last year. I kept one for my unopened collection.

Unfortunately, I must have left it out where my 5 year old could reach it. He doesn't yet understand the virtues of unopened collecting and he has the most fun opening packs. So I came home to this:

For reasons unknown to me, he hasn't actually opened the pack, he just lifted the seal. Since I can't close exactly close the seal back it looks like I am going to have my first vintage rip! I will post scans of my results as soon as I can.

Good luck. Hope Mr. Brett is nicely protected in the middle of the pack for you.

Good luck! If a Brett or Yount is in there, it will be within first seven cards from back of the pack which are from those sheets.

Hey, I could have also said the Carter or Rice RC would be within the last three cards of the pack. image

Very impressive Tim! So I opened my pack. Thanks for all the well wishes everyone. The good news is that the pack was pretty good to great from a condition standpoint--this is based only on observations of previous rips on here, this is my first 75 mini rip. Unfortunately no great star power. Obviously hoping for one of the big two, but failing that I was hoping for one HOFer to be lurking somewhere in there. It was looking pretty grim as I didn't recognize any of the names I was looking at until Bout the seventh or eight card in (I should have kept better track but I'm pretty sure it was number 8). That's where by my estimation, I hit the fifth or sixth best RC in the set (at least in my opinion).

I will post scans when I get back from dropping my kid off at kindergarten. Feel free to guess at the identity of the RC in the meantimeimage

Nice, Steve! I'm going to guess Fred Lynn? All of the 75 Rookie cards are from the two ** sheet, so it would have been card no. 8.

Tim, you know your 75 Topps. It was Fred Lynn. I couldn't remember if Hernandez had a RC in this set which is why I said 5th or 6th best RC in the set. Here are the results. The Dave Chalk was the wax card and I didn't picture the gum card. The cards have pretty good centering. The Harper has a small bend that doesn't show up in the scan on the bottom left corner. I think the Lynn RC is pretty sharp. Any of these look like they are worth a sub?

Agree on Lis and Lynn -- maybe throw up a bigger scan of those two?

Lis and Lynn. Quick look, Lis has 9 potential and Lynn more likely 8 t/b. Lynn is worth grading as an 8 and a 9 is nice upside.

The problem is you need a 10 to make it worthwhile. The Lis looks to be a candidate, I'd try that one. Not so sure on the Lynn...think it's got a bit of a tilt and the top corners look a tad soft

Thanks. The Lynn card is really sharp in person. I have never submitted this set before but I have generally been pretty accurate in my estimations of grades on previous subs. I would be willing to bet a lot that it is no worse than an 8. I think it's got a real shot at a 9 depending on the grader or even a 8.5 if the grader believes in such things. If the T/B centering were a touch better I think we could have a conversation about 9 and maybe even a 10 on the right day. As it is I would be more than happy with the Lynn at a 9.

Seeing better scans, Lynn 8, Lis 9. Both are more than worth grading financially at those levels. If you caught a 10 on the Lis it would be a bomb (currently a pop 12 9 with no 10s). Lis is an underrated card as it is often short and is a very tough 9. That card alone will buy you the pack and maybe more.

I would grade them both. I agree that neither is worse than an 8 and both have a shot at a 9, with the Lis being more probable. It looks like the Lis has a little snow on it, to the left of his hat. I don't believe it is bad enough to keep it from a 9. Both VERY nice cards, congrats.

I think Lis has a good chance at a PSA 9 if there are no defects on the back, though there appears to be a ding on the left edge about 1/3 of the way down that could releagte it to an 8/8.5. Lynn is a strong 8, imo.

Hey Duff why do you think the Lynn is only an 8? Looks like they are both 9's

Lynn is centered a bit low for a 9. It has a chance, but likely an 8 or an 8.5.

Low left shift at first glance. A closer look shows a little better l/r than I thought, but you don't generally get that second look. They also tend to drill minis centered low much more than high, even if it is the same %

  • Nice break on the Lynn RC and the Lis. If you are not keeping a graded set and not often submitting cards to grade be sure to you your annual "no cost" PSA club member vouchers (+ shipping, of course). I'd be surprised if the Lynn graded a 9. I have one, and the centering is better t/b. You can see two sales on ebay for PSA 9 with auction ending around approx $60 each. 8's fetched $17 to $26. Your card is more like the 8's centering. (Turn the card upside down and look at the centering. This lets you see the pattern of the card without seeing the image of the player to better judge the t/b centering without using a graduated loupe.)

The Lis could be a 9, or an 8 or a 7 if that rough end sours a grader... such is my experience of sending cards in for grading. IMO safely an 8 and with luck on your side a 9. Two recent Lis 8's sold for $10.50 and $8, with free shipping. Yours is better, though, so a buyer might step up a little.
