1986 Fleer basketball PSA 8 wax pack sells in 5 minutes on Ebay!

Listed a 1986 fleer basketball pack on Ebay last night and it sold in 5 minutes for $459.00. Wow! I guess I shouldn't be surprised that it is so sought after. My question is, are people opening these or stashing them away?

I doubt many folks are opening them these days. With BBCE getting $20k+ for unopened boxes we are going to see fewer and fewer loose packs. With the new PSA grading standards for packs where the gum has to be stuck very few 86 Fleer bsk packs will be graded going forward. Fleer added a ton of gum dust to the 86 Fleer packs and almost every pack I have ever opened had loose gum.
Personally I only like to open packs from a fresh box since it is so easy to sequence the Jordan RC. Your odds of pulling a Jordan from a graded pack are way less than the normal 1 in 11. I can remember CU forum breaks where once 2 or 3 Jordan's had been pulled folks decided to grade their packs out instead of opening them since the likelihood of pulling a Jordan in the remaining packs was so slim.

  • Hey Robb, thanks for all the info on the 1986. I am mostly familiar with old hockey wax and did not know that the packs were sequenced. Just hearing that is scary if buying packs from that year. I was tempted to crack it an take my chances but better heads prevailed. I'll try and get another graded pack from my pack source. TB

I agree on the sequence. From what I've learned from here, I would probably only buy a pack from a genuine box that was broke up by BBCE.

If psa is really done grading wax packs basically, all of these suddenly got a lot more valuable IMO. With that said I'm really annoyed I have one I didn't t send in from bbce to be graded

What was it graded? Usually cards that sell that fast are underpriced.
  • You probably could have sold it on the BST forum for that price and saved eBay fees.

Yes the PSA grading change of only grading the poorest of packs now while curious to pack collectors I think will certainly inflate the price for pre 2014 graded packs. I think it has certainly increased the prices for major packs like the 1980 bird/Erving/Johnson's and 1996 fleer basketball packs increasing or at least insuring there scarcity. I'm certainly glad I have as many graded as I do, but of course wish I had more.

Hey Todd, congrats on the sale!! I agree with Fergie that most people are just stashing these away now. Too much of a risk with the Jordan sequencing pretty well known. If I did collect unopened 1986 Fleer Basketball, I would only purchase it from BBCE as well.

I put one on the BST and had no takers for about a week. I put it on eBay and it sold within an hour. I wish I had got your sale priceimage I did work out a sale off eBay so it worked for me. Congratulations on your sale!
