Need opinion on possible tampered holders

Looking for opinions on a couple of cards I recently purchased on eBay. I am new to buying PSA graded cards and doing some research, I think I may have bought a couple with tampered holders. As you can see from the pics, the Maddux has a lot of frosting in that one area and on the side, it has a rough edge in the spot with all the frosting. It's not smooth like the rest of my PSA cases. The Randle has some frosting in that one spot, but other than that, it is smooth all the edges and doesn't look tampered. Plus the Randle isn't worth much, and the card looks mint, so not sure it would be worth someone's trouble to tamper with it. I am wondering if the Maddux Glossy was replaced with a regular Maddux. Any opinions are appreciated.

    They look fine.

I've had slabs come straight from PSA looking like that.

Those are actually welding marks left behind during the sealing process. There's no way you can pull a card out from just one side. A tampered or frosted slab will include one side as well as half of two connecting sides (at least). The frosting will have more of a cracked look. Maybe someone else will show an example. The slabs you have are all fine.

Thanks for the opinions. Feel better about them now. I know they aren't high dollar cards, so I wasn't sure. They just were a little different from the other PSA holders I have.
  • Im not so sure on that Maddux card.

That side view looks kind of funny to me. The rough spot in the "weld"? and the corner doesn't look uniform?
    Maybe just the scan.

I also disagree that a card can't be remove from a PSA slab(Old style) without cracking both sides.

Ive cracked 100's of PSA slabs for my raws sets and many open quite easily and Im sure I could get a card
    to shake out one side.

Even so the Ive popped open some PSA slabs so cleanly that they showed no signs of frosting.

Also what is all the "debris" on the top blue border by his name? Is that inside the holder? Print Spots on the card? Scanner debris?

The card is probably fine, but Im just playing Devils advocate on it.

They are absolutely fine. They often come straight from PSA that way; I've been handed them literally hot off the press with patches of frosting. With a tampered slab, frosting would be all along one side. And, in my opinion at least, the profit motive really doesn't seem to be there for those cards. If tampered slabs are a concern, then the best course is to buy from trusted sellers who care more about their rep than a one-time (and possibly small) score.

The side view is also fine; again, they often come that way-- look at many slabs you know are legit and you will see that happens. Talking to a PSA rep will also help assuage any concerns you may have about them.

That should have been your answer right there. Unfortunately slab tampering does happen, but not with low $ cards like these.

"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
  • Wow, I guess proper top/bottom centering on 87 Fleer is much lower than I thought. Just did a quick check on eBay for PSA 10 and they like the low centering. I was going to dump my 87 Fleer looks like I need to go through them again. I'm always learning something new from this board!image

    The slabs are fine.

I would be more concerned with the upper right corner showing some white on the Maddux card.
