Someone Twist my Arm (75 BB set)

Went to my LCS and the owner had a nice raw 75 set in NM condition listed at $600, my guess is that he would take $500-550 for it. Some of the star cards would be upgrades like Killebrew, Ryan HL, Morgan, F Robinson, Lynn, Hernandez, Palmer, and probably some other minor stars (all centered). I would also guess that there could be another 50-75 commons that would be upgrades. The Brett is near perfect with two print bubbles one blends into royals and the other can't remember, but otherwise is dead centered and no chipping--an absolute blazer. I did not see the Rose, Ryan card. The Aaron is o/c. The Yount is NM/EXMT-ish due to some o/c. Many of the other commons that are nice but are o/c, etc. and otherwise nothing that special.

My question is should I buy the set, upgrade the cards in my set, and then resale the original set and would I break even? My main goal is to own just one really nice 75 NM set. A lot of what would allow me to break even financially would be the grade of the Brett. I have 15 free submissions and if the Brett came back an "8" it might be worth it. What do you think?

Others would know better, but I doubt a card, especially a Star Rookie card, would come back an "8" with two surface bubbles. A "5-6" sounds closer to the grade.

Just my thoughts on this based on my recent submission. Whatever your eyes tell you that Brett would grade, KNOCK one grade off. With the colored borders it really seems like PSA is tough on 75's. Subtract any shipping fees, ebay fees for selling, etc. Is it still worth it ? If so, I than maybe. The other thing is when selling sets, and especially sets on ebay, it seems like a crapshoot if your planning on an auction to sell it quickly. I have listed two 76 sets over the past couple of weeks. The inferior set sold for 60 more than the superior set, even though I listed it very specifically as such. Ironically, I got good feedback on both, even though the one that sold for substantially less, that buyer should be ecstatic.

Also, just my opinion but I think a nm 75 set can be had for between 350-400. To me once you get to 500+ it needs to have a decent amount of nm/mt cards to be worth while. If you take out the star cards and replace them with yours, will the set your selling look more like an ex/mt set ? If so, I would guess you couldn't sell it for too much more than 200, unless you have very high feedback on your account.

So, if the stuff I mentioned above is true is it worth it to spend a couple hundred bucks to upgrade your set ?
