Wouldn't PSA gain many more submissions if...

...they didn't charge as much for cards that don't meet min grade? Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't you charged the same amount? And doesn't PSA incur less expense when they don't actually have to slab the card?

I would think people would send a lot more cards for submission if they weren't charged full price for cards that don't meet their min grade expectations. Think about how many cards people don't send in fear that the if min grade is not met it is not worth the sub prices alone....However, if the cost were a bit lesser for those that don't hit that grade they would more likely roll the dice, particularly on common cards

That would give the appearance of having a financial incentive to give higher grades, even if the cost was perfectly matched to the savings on the holder. If the costs weren't exact, then it could actually give an incentive to grade higher. I'm not sure that's something we want. I also suspect the savings would be minimal.

  • I disagree. I'm confident they offer the minimum grade service to the larger submitters and I see nothing wrong with it. For one person to look at the card quickly to determine if it meets 9 or 10 criteria should be a lot less than the second person look over plus the personnel slabbing, plus the slab itself. Normally, the lowest sub price is $4.50....I'm sure, say a $2 min grade fee, is making money for them.

If PSA didn't charge you for "Evidence of Trimming" or and other tampering, they would be flooded with altered cards, and their lead times would double or triple. At least by charging the full amount whether they're slabbed or not, they're putting the onus on the submitter to put their own money on their word that it's legit.

According to their official SEC docs, nothing is charged less than $4 for cards and $5 for coins, even the bulk submissions
