Late Night Mini Rip: 1976 Topps & 1980 Topps baseball wax packs! **Update 6/28/14**

I recently unearthed a box of loose wax packs I had been setting aside and found a couple packs of 1980 Topps wax packs with tears in the wrappers and a miswrapped 1976 wax pack, so here goes!! image

Good luck on the late-night or early morning rip. I'm sure there were some tears in those wrappers somewhere! Must have been!

I'm pretty sure miswraps are always fair game, but that '80 pack is clearly innocent.

    This one did!!

I was going to start off with the "undercard"~the 1980 pack, and lead up to the main event~the 76 pack~but the main event is NOW!

Card #8 into the pack from the back, the last card that could have been a Henderson RC and it was! It was quite a thrill and may be the best one I've ever pulled!

Holy crap!! One pack and it's got that!

If you just exacto a tiny bit off the top, you might have a 10

Wow nice. Only flaws i see are a small dot on the right blue border towards the top, and on the green to the right of A's. I say 9 all day. Is that snow on the surface at all?

Nice pull Tim. I may need to rip one of my 1980 vending boxes to join in the Hendu lovefest. image

  • I haven't pulled a 80 Henderson since 1980 when I was a kid. I still have the card, but the centering is awful so I kept it ungraded.
  • grote15grote15 Posts: 29,739 ✭✭✭✭✭
The 76 pack was a 10-card pack and cards were clean and sharp but centering wasn't that great. If only the Yount were a bit more to the right, LOL..Garland looks real nice.

It's seems anti-climactic now, but I'm going to tear into another 80 nwax pack. Maybe a Ryan or Rose awaits...

Thanks for all the encouraging words, guys!

Very nice Henderson, what a one-pack hit!

Good luck for whatever else may come in this edition of the patented LNR!

Pack 2 of 1980 Topps baseball was kind of the pack ripping equivalent of coming up to bat after the previous batter hit the go-ahead HR in the top of the 9th inning, LOL...no star power, but some sharp cards nonetheless. I really like these very early 1980s (1980-1981) Topps sets..

I'm more excited about Steve than Rickey. After all, Joe Torre declared him the next Willie Mays in 1977!

Maybe Joe was talking about the Mets version Willie Mays. In that case, he was dead on with that assessment. It's all in the context. image

And, oh, GORGEOUS Henderson. I'm thinking 9 all day.

Thanks again for all the kind comments, guys!

I pulled a Henderson RC from a super cello a few years back that graded Mint 9, but that one had slight chipping along the bottom edge which is very common with 1980 Topps baseball. This one is completely smooth and (imho) better than that one.

The best part of the pull, too, was that it was the 8th card in from the back of the pack, which is the last card before the pack switches to the high letter sheet cards (Henderson is from A sheet). The 7th card was an A's player also (Mario Guerrero), and I was a bit deflated when it wasn't Rickey, but it turned out that I got back to back A's cards, with Henderson being that last low letter sheet card!

The Rudi card in this scan is actually a 1980 OPC card, as I opened one pack of those after finishing up with the 80 Topps packs.
