On March 2, 1864 Grant received his promotion to the newly revived rank of Lieutenant General and General-in-chief of the Union army. (sorry, a few days late with the post)

Grant was not known to be featured on a contemporary Civil War Token because the use of private tokens were outlawed a little over a month after his elevation in rank. However, the Philadelphia engraver Frederick Key issued a token using Grant ( Patriotic die 144 , Store card rev:1151). These were delisted as being products of 1868, but are now listed inthe QDB book as part of the series. Medals featuring the General began to be made when he ran for president in 1868.
