Random PSA Question of the Day: Inner Liners

This board is pretty much the best. As someone pretty new to the hobby, it has been a really tremendous resource and has really helped lower the learning curve for me. Or, at least it feels like it... So, thanks!

Question I had recently:

Some cards, when slabbed by PSA, are not only encased, but also placed within what looks like a thin plastic liner. Sometimes, I have seen different cards from the same set that are the same approximate size be slabbed differently. Some with the liner, some without it. Does anyone know what criteria PSA uses to determine whether a card gets one? Can you request that your cards *not* be placed within the liner? Does "liner yes/no" matter to anyone? Personally, I am not a big fan; they tend to obscure the card a bit.

Sometimes the card is slightly larger and therefore put into a bigger housing holder. It needs the Mylar sleeve to keep it in place, but not full proof. Not sure if you can request no-sleeve cos if it doesn't fit in the proper holder, they won't holder it to prevent damage. Whenever I see sleeves, I think of the 89 upper deck Griffey rc.

My understanding is that the sealing department makes the call. I have cards from a number of sets that have some with the sleeve and others that don't.

I recently had some cards come back in a much larger holder then is generally used and PSA agreed to re holder them in the smaller holder that is normally used. I sent an email to a customer service rep with both scans and the explanation was the sealer was being conservative to prevent damage as they have a buy back guarantee.

I think your best bet is to call customer service and see if anyone can further expand on your question.
