on the heels of a VERY consistent recent sales history for this card in this grade (according to VCP, of course), it appears the upward trending of HOF rookies and their associated pricing has claimed another victim. have at it speculators. image

What is the consistent pricing on a PSA 8?

I am guessing you like that 82% bidding history with the seller.

I'm not too surprised by that price. The Yaz rookie is an absolute bear to find centered or without smudges and other print imperfections. This sterling example grades out very well in both areas. What would surprise me is if it stays in the same holder at the same grade.

here's your recent history......more than anything, i'm just curious. it does appear more than just a couple bidders were going after this card pretty heavily. if i owned a few, i'd probably consider selling now. image

Not as bonkers as some may think.

Consider the flip. Rocchi/Baker regime? While many older flips tend to appear soft for the assigned grade, this one looks pretty tasty. As Andy mentioned, the centering and the absence of the typical PD are noteworthy. Even more noteworthy is the price point should the card somehow find its way into a PSA 9. Even a half grade bump, which would appear highly probable, returns the purchase price and then some. I see the purchase not only logical, but a wise business move considering the climate.

yeah. so, let's address this....there seemed to be as many as 5 people willing to go above the norm......WAY above.

it's a sterling example, no doubt. but when compared to others of similar quality in the recent sales history, i don't see anything which makes this card stand out that far above the others. could it bump? of course it could. let's dance.

I don't see any others that have sold recently that can touch this one, especially the lack of print flaws.

However, that seller is not someone I recognize and the scan is not showing us a detailed close up of the card, so there could be a lot to this card we're not seeing

That seller had a beautiful run of old flip, HOF, PSA 8's last night -- bidding was spirited on most. I think the Yaz was more indicative of the quality of the seller's run of cards than anything else.

I paid strong for the 68 Mays and the 59 Aaron (probably too strong on the Aaron). But they all went well. The Reggie Jackson Rookie did well too.

The Yaz, Aaron and Mays all look very nice for the grade. I can totally see why someone would double the VCP price of that Yaz. It does not appear to have any PD and the centering is phenomenal.
Looking for high grade rookie cards and unopened boxes/cases
  • I was the under bidder on the Yaz. I agree with the other members that this card was super sharp, especially the surface for the grade. With a super low pop of 8.5 and higher, I felt like reaching well over VCP for this one. Unfortunately I lost out.

Did anyone see the Ryan RC go for $2800? That one has some noticeable print marks that it wasn't a sure thing to bump to an 8.5.

Wow, I thought it was just the Fisk PSA 9 rookies that I've been tracking (almost doubled in price over two years) that have been going nuts. Is it really all HOF RCs?

I was tracking a bunch of cards from this seller....they were really high quality. I ended up not even bidding; but they were gorgeous. The Mays cards were...to quote Scott "Tasty".

    Hello Mike,
I think you did great on your 68 Mays and especially the 59 Aaron.....that is a special card. I was tracking both and kind of forgot to bid. You had me on the 68; but the 59....I may have been your competitor. Good for you. They are gorgeous. Have a great day.

The Yaz is nice but not without some of the dreaded black print dots. It could 8.5 but I don't see it in a 9 holder. There are some very nice cards in the old flip holder. You definitely have to be careful but since they were the first slabbed cards, some of the freshest, nicest cards in the hobby were holdered at that time. Just think, the 60s cards that were being graded at that time were 30 years or newer when holdered. That's like us submitting 1984 cards today.

I loved his '57 Mays. Outbid as usual. image

Another PSA 8 Yaz RC, with near perfect centering but worse print dots than last night's card, is at $544 with an hour left.

I have to thank itzagoner for starting this thread because it brought my attention to this beautiful PSA 8 Yaz RC, which I recently purchased. And I got it for $285.79 less than it went for on March 1 image. I was concerned that there might be something wrong with the card after the buyer sold it so quickly, but such is not the case.

wow, very nice grab. this card has stayed reasonably strong in this grade in recent auctions, including a PWCC example for over $1200 image

in early March, my curiosity was stimulated by the heavy spike, but it seems the high bidding was encouraged by the overall quality of that sellers graded cards. he had a very nice run of stuff if i recall.

presumably, the guy who resold this card might have thought he was going to approach the level achieved in the PWCC auction. all speculation, of course.

i think the price you paid is more in line with the current market as it has consistently stabilized over 2013 pricing, but should continue to rise for the best examples.

did i just go all DPeck?! image

I did query the seller on why he was getting rid of the card so soon after buying it, and he said he tried unsuccessfully to get it bumped to an 8.5. Of course that's just me taking him on his word, but I believe him.

It's a touch weak for a 9 in general, but it's missing all the common print defects and a rough cut (OPC-like) edge is not uncommon on the 60s.

ETA: After looking more closely at the back, there are a multitude of print defects in the yellow and black. The 'G' in T.C.G. is almost completely missing. That said, the front registration is about the best I've seen w/two tiny fisheyes being the only defects that stood out.
