Thoughts on this Pete Rose card...

image

A PSA 8 just sold for around $1600 on Ebay.
There is 1 PSA 9 and in discussion with the guy who owns it, thinks it is probably a $4k-$5k card

The PSA 9oc that I just got is also a pop 1 as a 9 qualifier. I know anything with a qualifier is minus 2 grades but I think the value on this is much higher than a 7.
Open for discussion on what the CU boards think a value would be...

Personally, I would be hard pressed to see any justification for that in a straight PSA 7 (I understand the centering of the issue) despite the fact that it counts as a 7 in the Registry. However, given that the Registry is a powerful force, my guess is that it would be worth more than a PSA 7 only because of the flip, but not so much so that it would push anywhere close to a PSA 8 price ($1400-1600). My guess would be around $400-500, versus the $200 or so for a PSA 7.

I should have put that VCP is showing the last sale on a PSA 7 at $225, 2 years ago

Generally speaking, a 9OC will command a higher price than a straight 7. That card belongs in an OC holder, imo, and is accurately graded, imo.

This was my exact thinking. In my mind it as a $400-$500 card

Keep me in mind if you ever have any really nicely centered, clean '71 OPCs. I am really falling in love with those black beauties.

This might afford you some insight into the buyers' mind: as a collector and occasional Registry player, I would prefer a centered 7 in my collection and would pay more for said 7.
This 9OC still has some top border roughness, plus a print imperfection on the left border-- I thus think the grade is a hair generous. Now there are of course legions of sticker collectors who may pay a wee bit more to see a 9 on their sticker. End analysis from my end: were I looking to move it quickly I'd be happy with PSA 7 money.

As someone who is very active from PreWar to 80s, I can say I am seeing more and more collectors with whom I deal place great emphasis on centering, when buying. In turn, sellers are seeking hefty premiums for exceptionally well centered cards. The inverse is holding true as well, with exceptionally poor centering being tough to move, and being increasingly deemed undesirable.

  • I think the questions are.............

1- Are there more 9 O/C buyers in the market
2- Are there more centered PSA 7 buyers in the market.

Then again. It really doesn't matter, because all you need is one buyer looking for that card.
