I think it's a nice idea, as long as we somehow incorporate the sacrifices our military have made in the festivities of the day.
However, if they made opening day a national holiday, then I could only see young kids staying home and playing their video games all day, and women at the malls buying all the "opening day" sales that stores would entice them with.
I do like the idea, as long as there is a historical aspect about it (i.e., Abe Lincoln playing baseball, Jackie Robinson, etc. etc.)
For this to work at all they need to go back to the tradition of having the first game of the regular season be the Reds' first game at home. At least I think they used to do that...
