Maybe I'm getting better at this grading thing, but maybe not. - 1975 sub results in quick

Fastest poppage ever for me. They logged it on 2/22 and popped 2/28 ? Maybe they had it together with my other order ? Who knows, but I'm happy with the fast turn around. Surprised I only hit one gem mint 10 on my 77's, but my Sutter rookie came back a 9. I forgot in the sub I sent in earlier this month I had a Sutter rookie which wasn't as nice. This was the nicer one. Got an 8 on a Henderson rc, Ozzie rookie, and Murray rookie so those are the highlights. Along with 11 gem mint 10's !!! Yeah baby, heating up ! Now If I can only rid myself of the mixed in 5's and below. Every card in this sub I expected an 8 or better on, so who knows what I missed there.

Well I wanted to share quite possibly the nicest 5 I have ever seen !

    image

The only thing I can find wrong with it even upon further inspection is his hat has what looks to be a tint of green. So maybe that is a print defect ? So, why wouldn't it grade a 9 pd ? The back is perfectly clean and centered, so it has to be something on the front. I can't find a hairline crease like I did on an earlier sub that a 78 Tom Seaver ended up in a 3. But this one is really perplexing me. I need some of these eagle eye guy's to spot the glaring defect for me !

At least I hit some nice cards with this sub, so this one doesn't really bother me too much, just that I can't find what was wrong, so I can avoid it for future subs.

Most likely its surface wrinkles. Hold the card up to the light at an angle. See if you see any ripples on the surface. Late 70s cards are notorious for having wrinkled surfaces. Not sure if the stress from the manufacturing process pushed the paper but you'll see a whole series of light wrinkles across the surface. Or it may be a single light wrinkle on the front or back. The backside wrinkles will be harder to see through the holder butthey can sometimes be seen in bright light.

Some snow near the brim of the hat? Ever so slight diamond cut? Just guessing

I don't think it's snow. Even readily apparent snow would only take a mint card down to a 7.

spider wrinkle, more of a paper defect then a wrinkle or crease.. almost guarantee it.

+1. 77 Topps football is like that also. Harry Carson rookies immediately came to mind.

Nice Jeff. How did you get two PSA 10's on the Ryan? I sent in 10 of the best from two vending and got all PSA 8/9's. Very jealous.

'77 topps baseball paperstock is horrendous! its like pulp. I'm pretty sure theres a surface wrinkle, making it a 5

I agree on the card stock of the 77's. Big pain.

@Shane - I bought two rack cases of 86 topps a couple of years ago. I ripped one, and planned on saving the other. I sent in what I felt were the two best Ryans, Roses, Ripkens, Rickey's and a couple of Sandbergs. Maybe a few others I'm forgetting. All 9's and 8's. I thought it was a loss, so I sold the other case. Meanwhile a few weeks ago I bought some cards off a buddy from the late 70's. He had some nice 77's and I did as well to sub. I grabbed 2 more Ryan's, a Rose, Ripken and Pucket as THROW INS !!! Shows you what I know. I still have more very nice Ryan's, and I have one of the original psa 9's. I think I will crack that and resub. Total Luck, as far as I'm concerned with 86's. They are so freakin hard to read, IMO.

I can't say I'm at all upset though. And to boot with this sub, I got one of those gold coins ! I couldn't be happier. (unless I can get over subbing these cards that come back a 5)

I figured I would share my latest results. Not as good. I delved into subbing my 75's. I can see where you hard core 75 collectors struggle with how tough they are on grading. I was hoping for 9's on all the commons I subbed, I wasn't expecting any 10's. I did get a couple of good results though. I was hoping for a 9 on the Carolton and the Carew, and hit on the Carew. I had a couple of commons from 78,79 and 81 that I missed with my last sub, that were nice, so they got included. I don't know where or when I got the Hank aaron card, so I will be interested to see why they say it was trimmed. It definitely wasn't from a pack though. I was also hoping for a 9 on both 83 rookies, but they weren't that sharp, so I'm not too shocked one came back an 8. I also probably should have specified that I wanted no qualifiers on the Brett/Yount rookies. I would probably rather have straight 7's than 8 oc's, but oh well.
