interesting useless set registry statistics

I didn't have enough to do today, so I looked up the following statistics. This show the number os sets registered by year for vintage baseball. It only includes "current finest" sets. Gives you an idea of where people are collecting,--- at least those people who register their sets.

The numbers are the number of sets registered with the following completion percentage

year, 100%, 90%, 50%, 10%

Bowman
1952, 3, 5, 7, 8
1953 5, 7, 8, 12
(color)
1954 0, 0, 2, 3
1955 0, 0, 1, 5

Topps
1952 5, 8, 10, 18
1953 2, 5, 9, 13
1954 5, 9, 10, 14
1955 4, 9, 10, 12
1956 4, 9, 10, 16
1957 1, 4, 6, 10
1958 0, 1, 4, 6
1959 1, 3, 7, 11

1960 1, 1, 2, 6
1961 2, 6, 8, 11
1962 0, 0, 1, 5
1963 1, 2, 6, 12
1964 0, 1, 2, 6

1965 0, 2, 3, 10
1966 0, 0, 1, 5
1967 2, 2, 5, 10
1968 1, 3, 4, 16
1969 0, 0, 3, 11

1970 0, 0, 0, 10
1971 1, 2, 3, 11
1972 0, 3, 5, 11
1973 0, 0, 0, 3
1974 1, 1, 1, 8

I went as far as 1974 just so I could show Carlos' set. image

    What happened to 1948, 1949, 1950 and 1951 Bowman?

    Vargha,

They aren't important, especially the 1951 Bowman set. image

    Buckwheat,

The statistics are very interesting considering that almost nobody was building fully graded post 1960 sets just a year ago. Now there is a complete graded set listed on the registry for half of the sets from the 1960's and two completely graded sets from the 1970's. Plus the Fab Five are all getting close to finishing the 1972 set.

I think within a year there will be a completly graded sets for all of these years, and maybe one or two from the 1980's.

  • I agree with the completion statement, with the exception of the 1980's sets. I strongly doubt that we will see any complete sets (slabbed) from that decade.

  • Here you are David. I arbitrarily started with the 1952 Bowman. The 1948 Bowman is a very small set.

    Bowman
    1948 ---3, 5, 6, 8
    1949 ---1, 2, 3, 4
    1950 ---3, 4, 6, 6
    1951 ---3. 4, 5, 6

All of David Hall's sets are not included because they are not "current finest".

Zardoz> Actually, I'm working on an 80T set. I'll be more active on it in late summer. I'm also about 8% of the way into an 82F set in PSA9.

i think the 80's and 90's grading specials when they come will help % numbers grow quite a bit for both these decades.

Interesting findings. Note the difference between 1957 and 1958, and 1961 and 1962. One year apart, but lousy cardboard and woodgrain borders make a world of difference.
